'Social' Budget: Housewife Tax, Cut Discounts for Poor

(IsraelNN.com) The proposed 2008 budget, which the government has stated is aimed at helping weaker sectors in society, includes a tax on non-working housewives and a cut in discounts in electricity for the poor.

The budget plans for a small deficit, but the past two years the Finance Ministry has ended the year with larger-than expected surplus that has amounted to more than $4 billion.

The State of Israel used to pass (and possibly still does pass) retroactive tax laws, where the citizens not only owe the tax, but must pay it for the past 5 years also, as if the law was on the books 5 years ago.

This kind of insanity helps to explain the Israeli penchant for finding all kinds of "under the table" methods for "getting by and making ends meet", in a country where following the rules as they're written will quickly produce destitution.

Meanwhile, the "leadership" live in guarded multi-million dollar houses and have no viable means of accounting for where the money came from to support such a lavish lifestyle.

Perhaps they accept foreign funds set up in overseas bank accounts, in exchange for their willingness to betray their own people?
