Here's a short version of the video:
Arrogant Congressman Belittles Texas Border Sheriff… Those Living at the U.S. Border are Expendable? Little or No Compassion for Security and Safety of Legal American Citizens.Congressman Henry Cuellar (D-TX), recently appeared on the nationally broadcast Glenn Beck television show. Cuellar was being questioned by another guest, his local district Webb County Sheriff Rick Flores, about the lack of funding being put towards fighting crime on the border. "I want to ask the congressman, who is he representing: President Calderon or his district here in Laredo, Texas, where we haven't received any resources at the local level to be able to combat the problems at the border?" said Flores. The congressman then retorted with a brazen response, "Well, first of all, let me say this, Mr. Sheriff, what we're looking at is you have got more money than you've ever gotten in the past, and you've got to keep in mind that the border will be patrolled by the Border Patrol and by the federal agencies; we will work with the local law enforcement… but your job is to be a county sheriff, not a U.S. Congressman, which is a big difference. My job is to look at the big picture. Your job is to look at the little picture."
The Sheriff was asking good, honest questions about just what in the world is going on at the border, and he received an arrogant and belittling response from the very man who is supposed to be looking out for border security on behalf of U.S. citizens in the area. In fact, what raised the topics addressed in this matter was the fact that the congressman was being questioned as to his support of a federal aid package for Mexico. The package proposes that the United States should give millions of dollars and state of the art military technology, along with some U.S. military-issue helicopters to the Mexican government. The Sheriff was wondering why our government, that is supposed to be listening to the needs of the American people, is giving millions of dollars to Mexico and there is no money to be found for allocation to U.S. border security.
The Sheriff, this honest, upstanding public servant and U.S. citizen, was then told to shut his mouth and worry about his "little" part of the world as one of the "little people" who obviously don't matter to very important U.S. Congressmen. Glenn Beck said what the nation was thinking, "That was the most belittling response I have ever heard, Shame On You." And he is right .
This all too common, elitist bent so evident in our lawmakers is showing its ugly head at all levels of government. Our representatives somehow think they are better than we, that because they have been entrusted in a position of leadership that they can belittle our experiences and real world lives, disregard our concerns, and jettison common sense and time-honored tradition. They tell us that giving millions of dollars away to Mexico is a wise course of action, even at the expense of our national security and national sovereignty. I know you are thinking what the majority of Americans are thinking when they read something like that, "Why don't we put that money towards our own border security?"
It is time for us to stop letting arrogant, self-serving, belittling, lawmakers think that they have any right to tell us what to do. WE tell them what to do, the people are the ones who should be listened to, not told what course of action is best. Glenn Beck did the right thing by admonishing the wayward congressman. You too can show the government what you think and how you feel, if they aren't going to listen then it is time to SHOW them what needs doing and you really want to get done. The Minuteman Civil Defense Corps has been building security fence on the border for years. They are listening to the needs of the people of the United States. When the government fails, it is up to the people to make things right. And the people want a fence. You can help make it happen, you can support good men like Sheriff Rick Flores in his struggle to combat crime on the border by donating to the Minutemen Civil Defense Corps. The money will go to the UNITED STATES and not to Mexico. It will go to security, it will go to border fence that shows how to STOP alien incursions across American sovereign territory.
Cuellar and many in Congress are showing us who they are, completely duplicitous. Cuellar dares to make speeches about Iraq and how the government of Iraq must provide security to its own citizens so our troops can come home. He calls upon the citizens of Iraq to stand up and fight, and defend their homeland. Why can't he do the same, and support his own County Sheriff in his own 28th Congressional District in Texas?
