November 22, 2007

The Staff of The JTF Forum wishes everyone a Happy Thanksgiving! Let us remember that this is a day to thank G-d and not a "politically correct" holiday of "thanking Indians" or a day to watch football games.

For more on Thanksgiving, please see http://jtf.org/forum_english/index.php?topic=1267.0 .

My Rav asked in his Shiur yesterday morning, "How many people do you think actually thank G-d on Thanksgiving?".  At first it seems like a silly question, but when you think about it, I doubt very many people do...

Yeah, just check out Joe Gutfeld's question to Chaim this week where he calls it a "Secular holiday".

Does your rabbi celebrate it?
I'm not sure - I didn't ask him.  It has no Xtian overtones, and it's certainly not forbidden to celebrate it.  I wouldn't if I had the choice, but I'm basically forced to (a lot of family comes in).

I do what I wrote in the linked thread on my first post in this thread.

The GREAT BIG PROBLEM is that Hallacha strictly forbids men to create a religious holiday. The Jews are bound to celebrate only the Jewish Feasts. And the Noachides can only celebrate also some Jewish Holidays (without the rites or and ritual rest, for example they MUST NOT do Shabat, but can celebrate the Seventh Day).
Even a date named in Torah for Gentiles, like the end of the Flood or the day the Reainbow appeared in the sky, is forbidden to be celebrated, since Hashem did not order it!!!!! Strictly the only kosher man-made celebrations allowed are secular National Days for patrotism, or one's and one's family birthdays. The rest is forbidden to Jews and Bnei Noah. That's the Hallacha!!!!!!
However I'm not so strict and sometimes remember the beggining of seasons.

So what do you say? Apart from the brachot on the food (HaMotzi and Birkat HaMazon.), I say Pslam 118:1-4 (Hodu LaShem KiTov, Ki LeOlam Chasdo.).
I ended up giving a Dvar Torah on this week's Parsha - specifically the raping of Dina, Shimon and Levi's "retaliation," and the different opinions as to why Yaakov was mad at them.

I would have responded with Ma Nishtanah Halayla Hazeh :)
