Proposal threatens Shrine of Remembrance

A PROPOSED building up to 40 storeys high threatens to cast a shadow over the sanctity of Melbourne's Shrine of Remembrance, Victorian Premier John Brumby says.
The Melbourne City Council will tonight consider a proposal by a developer to build the tower in St Kilda Road.
The building would be up to 160m high and cast a shadow over the southwest corner of the shrine.
Planning Minister Justin Madden will have to approve the development at the site, which has no height restrictions.
Mr Brumby said the proposal was inappropriate and the shrine should be protected.
"It's a sacred place and I think that's how Victorians and Australians would see it," he said today.
"It's placed there as a memorial to ... Australians who've lost their lives in previous wars.
"Because it's a sacred space, I don't think you want it being overshadowed or its sanctity or presence being compromised by a neighbouring development."
