The problem is that this talk is nothing new. If this comes even close to fruition the airline industry will lobby congress and all sorts of legal opposition to prevent this from occurring. What we really need to improve our system is a full privatization of our rail infrastructure. All the red tape that the FRA creates needs to be cut. If private developers were given the green light to just build without these environmental restrictions, something would actually get done. Requiring developers and operators to be fully accountable for their actions and replacing FRA regulations with insurance requirements would serve as an excellent free market source of checks and balances.
If you compare the way that Greyhound bus operates to that of the Chinatown buses, you will see that the Chinatown buses are not only cheaper, but provide greater on-time performance and reliability as well as a nicer ride. The same would work with the rail industry if allowed to succeed.

It must be because the Chinese bus companies are racists. I have seen them arguing with human trash every once in a while. Despite their aggressive nature of trying to get customers onto their buses, they somehow do know who not to let on.

Personally I think the Septa/NJT combo is more comfortable, but when it is not rush hour the Chinatown bus cruises past the NJT trains as they crawl through the Secaucus transfer station. Why the NJT trains often crawl at 20-30 mph when they should be traveling over 70 disturbs me. If only the red tape of the FRA was abolished and private companies were able to use the rail infrastructure to compete in a free market we would have a great rail system. Instead of governments partially funding Amtrak and their inefficient operation, they should fully fund the rail infrastructure only and let competing companies use it. If this applies both to freight and passenger service it would make it possible for small shipping companies to use rail instead of truck.
