Often times, people who have lots of power or who are in big power positions often become tempted to abuse that power by engaging in illegal activity since they believe they are above the law and can get away with this without getting caught. People in political power also engage in a lot of hypocrisy, engaging in the very activity they are fighting against. We saw this with Larry Craig who spoke ardently against gay rights only to engage in a homosexual act himself. Now Spitzer, someone who was notorious for breaking up prostitution rings has now been caught engaging in this very activity. Now knowing how long he's been doing this, he was probably caught up in prostitution rings while he was breaking them up. My guess is is that he could have been making personal deals with them as he was breaking them up: You give me a special discount service, and I'll look the other way on this.
I'm just surprised how many people are saying, "So what?" about this. They don't seem to differentiate between what Clinton did and what Spitzer did. Putting aside all moral judgments, even if one doesn't think that Spitzer did anything morally wrong, the fact of the matter still remains that he broke some very serious laws! And yet I've heard some people state that they don't think that prostitution should be illegal. I reply by saying, that's fine, but the fact of the matter still is is that it is illegal and he engaged in this illegal activity. Also, many people also don't understand that it's not only prostitution, but that he also broke some federal human trafficking laws by having someone cross state lines. There's also some evidence that he may have laundered money to engage in all his extracurricular activities. So these are all some very serious crimes that he committed. It's a whole lot more than him just getting a little extra on the side as so many people try to put it.
