An Indian-American high school student from North Carolina -- Shivan Sud -- defeated 1,600 other students across the United States to win the Intel Science Talent search, or what is called in scientific circles 'The Junior Nobel'.
The award came with a US $100,000 scholarship. Shivan Sud who is all of 17 years won the award for developing a model to identify stage II Colon Cancer patients at a high risk for recurrence. Her award winning work also focused on identifying what may be the most effective drugs for treatement for those with high risk of recurring tumours.
The sixty-seven year old science search competition that she won, has previously awarded top honours to students who went on to win six Nobel Prizes.
