Asara BeTevet Commemorated Sunday
21:40 Dec 30, '06 / 9 Tevet 5767

(IsraeNN.com) The Fast of the Tenth of Tevet, one of the four fast days on the Jewish calendar commemorating the destruction of the Holy Temple, will take place Sunday throughout the Jewish world. The date marks the day the Babylonian army began its siege of Jerusalem, leading to the destruction of the First Temple. Food and drink are not consumed between dawn and sunset on this fast, although work and other weekday activities are permitted.

In addition, the Tenth of Tevet was established by the Chief Rabbinate as the “General Kaddish Day,” in which special memorial services are held for victims of the Holocaust whose date of death is not known, or whose families were wiped out, leaving no one to say Kaddish for them.
