Bush Administration torn over Israeli strike on Iran
« on: July 07, 2008, 10:49:59 AM »
A senior Israeli government official on Sunday responded to recent statements by American leaders regarding a possible Israeli attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities by saying they were representative of an intense debate at the White House over how to deal with Tehran’s nuclear ambitions.

Speaking to The Jerusalem Post, the official explained that within the Bush Administration there is a “hawkish camp” led by Vice President Dick Cheney that wants to employ the military option to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, and feels an Israeli raid is the perfect way to get the ball rolling.

On the other side is the “dovish camp” led by Secretary of State Congoleezza Rice and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates that believes the US and its allies must continue with thus far ineffective diplomatic efforts to convince Iran to voluntarily halt its nuclear program.

Israel, said the official, is currently being used as a pawn by both sides to further their own agendas.

While Israel has all but admitted to preparing for a possible strike on Iran should diplomatic efforts ultimately fail, Jerusalem has acknowledged that it would be unable to take military action against the Islamic Republic without a green light from Washington.

“We would need to fly through airspace controlled by the US, and we would need their help in dealing with repercussions from any attack,” the Israeli government source told the Post. He noted that a strike on Iran would likely raise oil prices to around $300 a barrel and bring severe international sanctions on Israel.

Late last month, former US Ambassador to the UN John Bolton told a British newspaper that if Democratic candidate Barack Hussein Obama wins the upcoming presidential election, Israel will feel intense pressure to hit Iran before Obama’s January inauguration.

Obama has repeatedly indicated that if he becomes president, the military option against Iran will be completely removed from the table. Musslims don't attack Musslims!

Meanwhile, London’s Daily Telegraph reported on Monday that the latest Western intelligence reports reveal that Iran has secretly resumed work on constructing equipment that experts say is used primarily for building nuclear weapons.

According to the report, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard has set up a number of companies on the outskirts of Tehran that appear to be regular civilian companies, but which are actually busy constructing advanced gas centrifuges capable of enriching uranium to weapons grade.

It's a shame that Israel would need help from the United States from the repurcussions of an attack on Iran.  If they could handle the war by themselves they wouldn't need to kiss America's asss.  And the way Israel performed in the war against Hezbolla, 2 years ago,  I have no doubt that Israel would need help from America.

Yes, maybe Americans can pay 5,6,7,8, 10 for a gallon of gas? An attack now would cripple us all I say there is NO way Israel attacks Iran, atleast not before the November elections.
Israel did not prove itself capable in a ground war with Hezbollah, an unprepared attack on Iran would be a disaster to us all. I am holding out hope the subversives in Iran can overthrow the mullahs and the Iranians can help themselves.

Have patience and wait when the time is right. As terrible a leader Bush is, he will not allow Iran to be in a position to destroy Israel...Hussein Obama on the other hand will screw us all.

I think now the media is also pulling out needles in hay stacks with Bush at this rate they are already eating crow about the 550 tons of yellow cake found in Iraq.   I think in  my mind and heart the media is going to dig anything no matter if its right or wrong to make Bush look bad and try to help Obama saying " See, McCain will be like Bush" Beware of the media, it is like these polls I keep seeing, how come I never gotten one.  I don't know anyone who has gotten one,  have you?   I remember they kept "polling"  showing Kerry coasting ahead of Bush in 04, and then reality sinks in only one poll count and thats election day.

As far as Iran goes, Israel should and if the world whines so be it, atleast the threat into Israel is gone.

This is a very good point. Nobody has considered the very real possibility of a half a$$ed Israeli strike on Iran that fails to get the job done.

You seem to be misstaing things.

Israel doesn't want to be condemned.  Olmert and Ehud Barak are a lot to blame.  The latter decided to leave Lebanon.

I can see it now: This will be G-d Forbid, another Lebanon 2006! >:( These stupid rednecks in the Honkey House (Oh wait Obama hasn't started calling it that yet has he?) better get their affairs in order. Just remember this: If Iran has their way G-d Forbid, America's next! >:(  If that happens and we'll still around to talk about it, forget the weak dollar, we'll be asking for Euros to pay our bills.
