Infact he looks less, he is wearing glasses and a shirt and tie, has a maustache, a very intentionally man made hair cut.

You called him ape like, but you could do that for most photos of black people, who look no more or less ape like than him.
 
The wife picture was unusual in that it was a human -a female one- doing a rather uniquely ape like expression,  quite a masculine one, one you wouldn't normally see a woman do under any circumstances. And the environment with the tree made her look even more more ape like.
