Georgia's Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki met Wednesday with Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili and other Georgian officials to discuss bilateral ties and the regional situation.
The Georgian Foreign Ministry said that Iran could play a positive role in the region. It added that Georgia and Iran agreed to maintain regular contacts and consultations.
Previous contacts between Iranian officials and Georgia, a U.S. ally, have been rare.
