Why was Al Sharpton not popular in 04 but Osama is?

Obama appeals to the media and stupid Americans in a way Sharpton never could. Think sperficially here.
Obama is Half white, he is thin, he presents himself nicely, he speaks well, and he is not threatening. He also does not have all the obvious dirty laundry/scandals that Sharpton and so many others have.
