So I was looking at this site.

https://genographic.nationalgeographic.com/genographic/lan/en/journey.html

I want to trace my lineage. I am a Cohen and I have heard that Cohen have the CMH hapotype which can be traced, anyone ever done any DNA tests before and how it works or any other suggestions?

This is a good site; the director spoke several times at the Jewish genealogical society I'm involved in.

http://www.familytreedna.com

I did my mitochondrial DNA through them; this is how I confirmed Sephardi ancestry on my mother's side (my mother was a convert to Torah Judaism, but when I got into genealogy I began to suspect she had Jewish biological origins as well. Further research, plus their test, confirmed it.)

I heard Cohen gene can only be tested from Y chromosome or something (passed down by males), test looks like it's about 149 bucks, I may give it a shot.

I'd really like to try this. If you do let me know how it goes please. You don't have to share your results of course, just tell me if you think it was a good experience or they did a good job.

I don't mind sharing my results. I'm debating if I should go through familytreedna (149 dollars) or national geographic (107 dollars)

Maybe there's a way to find out people who have done both. I wonder if there's a help line you can call on the sites to ask if they can give you the information you're looking for. The familytreedna site looks very good. Be careful about your privacy because you don't want them to sell your genetic information later and then find out you've been denied insurance because of it.
