The Georgian Interior Ministry says it has uncovered a plan to overthrow the government, hatched by former senior military officers.
Defence Minister David Sikharulidze claims a Georgian tank battalion started a mutiny. Heavy artillery has since been deployed to surround the military unit at Mukhorvani. Tbilisi residents report seeing helicopters and military vehicles traveling towards the location.
According to ITAR TASS correspondents all high-ranking officials from the Georgian Defense Ministry have arrived at the location, including the Defense Minister, with Interior Minister, Vano Merabishvili expected to arrive shortly.
One hour before the Georgian Interior Ministry reported that it had exposed a mutiny, Mamuka Gorgishvili, the commander of the Mukhrovansky tank battalion, made a statement, which Interfax reports, declaring that his soldiers will not intervene in the tense political situation in the country, and supporting appeals for dialogue.
