Police: Fatal Shooting at Abortion Doctor's Church

WICHITA, Kan. | Wichita police say a "high-profile individual in the community" has been shot and killed at the church where late-term abortion provider Dr. George Tiller attends.

Police spokesman Gordon Bassham told The Associated Press that the 67-year-old man was shot at 10:03 a.m. Sunday as he was on his way to attend services at Reformation Lutheran Church in east Wichita.

Bassham would not confirm whether the victim was Tiller. Bassham said police are not releasing the identity of the man shot until his family members have been notified.

Tiller has been among the few U.S. physicians performing late-term abortion. His clinic has repeatedly been the site of protests for about two decades.

Bassham said no suspects are in custody. He said it is not clear whether one or more suspects were involved.

The gunman fled the scene in a 1993 powder blue Ford Taurus registered in another part of the state.
