CONCORD — Talks between the operator of a politically conservative kiosk and the management of Concord Mills went nowhere Tuesday.
The kiosk operator, Loren Spivack, and his merchandise will have to be gone at the end of business on Friday.
Spivack says the mall managers offered him a deal: If he removed three bumper stickers and a T-shirt that all made negative political statements about President Obama, he could renew his lease that is due to expire Friday. Spivack refused the offer, calling it a matter of principle.

The late Sen. Jim King wants to be a Seminole for eternity. And his beloved alma mater is happy to oblige.
King, the popular Republican lawmaker who died Sunday after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer, will be cremated and interred at the year-old King Life Sciences Building on the campus of Florida State University, family spokesman Gus Corbella said Monday.
FSU dedicated the $55 million building to King last September in recognition of his help in securing state funding for biomedical research and other campus projects.

On Sunday, the city of Miami Beach and its Historical Association will rename 71st Street from Collins Avenue to Bay Drive in honor of the Frenchman who created the islands of Biscaya and Normandy, and who dreamed up and financed the 79th Street Causeway in the 1920s.

Miami Dade College student Anthony Paz will spend this summer visiting the homes of family friends -- and the friends of family friends -- extolling the virtues of chef's knives and vegetable peelers.
The 19-year-old from Kendall started selling Cutco cutlery last summer because he couldn't find an opening at a fast-food restaurant. Lucky for him: He says he made $12,000 as a traveling knife salesman, and hopes to double that between now and the start of classes in August.
Other young people aren't so fortunate. With Florida's unemployment rate the highest since 1976, college and high school students are facing stiff competition for summer jobs.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — While protesters rallied in his support, the owner of a Concord Mills kiosk that sells conservative merchandise said he met with the mall's manager Sunday to see what arrangements can be made for him to remain after his lease expires Friday.
Nothing was agreed to, except that the two would meet again Monday, said Loren Spivack, owner of Free Market Warrior.
Spivack has contended that he's being kicked out of the mall for political reasons. He's traced his exile to a letter to the editor in the Charlotte Observer criticizing his business, saying it promotes “ideas such as racism, sexism and even slavery.”
He said he was at work again Sunday when he got a call from mall manager Ray Soporowski inviting to talk in his office.
“It was a pleasant, amicable conversation, but we didn't come to any resolution about whether our business would be able to stay in the mall,” Spivack said. “He wanted to include some of his company's senior management and we agreed to talk again Monday.”
Mall officials have repeatedly declined to comment. Reached Sunday, Soporowski continued that policy. “With all due respect, that conversation is between Loren and myself,” he said.
Sunday, about 100 people rallied in front of the mall to support Spivack and his right to free speech.
He opened his Free Market Warrior kiosk last spring, selling such items as “Impeach Obama” bumper stickers and baby bibs that say, “My parents chose life. Thanks Mom and Dad!”
Spivack said he's found other stores in the mall selling T shirts and other merchandise with offensive slogans and feels he's being targeted “purely for politic reasons.”
Since the controversy arose, he said his business has picked up.
