Yes they did! Yet majority of the French Jewry survived. There were a lot of French who helped Jews and were a lot who just were ambivalent. Then again, there the likes of Xavier Vallat and scum that comprised Milice that were willing accomplices in extermination of Jews. Why did you bring the French and not say the US or English who banned Jewish immigration. The example of Lubavitcher Rebbe who was saved due to significant American pressure convincingly demonstrates that USA (Roosevelt) could have easily save the Jews of Europe. So ok, the French Milice and collaborators were the dregs of the French society. So why the best of US society, its government, was complicit in murdering Jews?!
