One of my courses requires me to read his autobiography.... anything I should know about him before I begin?

The history books will call him a pioneer of the civil rights movement.  If he was white, he would be labeled a evil bigot, which he was.

He was a pioneer of the "black power" movement, and he was also a black separatist/supremacist.

If you have the time please read Bruce Perry's biography titled Malcolm: The Life of a Man Who Changed Black America. It'll give you a better insight into this fellow.

He belonged to the Nation of Islam, left it for more mainstream Islam, and was assassinated by Elijah Muhammad for his "betrayal".

Actually, Elijah Muhammad had Malcolm killed because Malcolm was exposing the fact that Elijah Muhammad was an amoral hypocrite who had numerous affairs with different women and fathered several children out of wedlock. Elijah Muhammad, being semi-literate, was also jealous and resentful of Malcolm's speaking ability and also of his popularity. His killing (you can't murder scum) had almost nothing to do with his conversion to mainstream Islam.

I recall when the movie about Malcolm X was about to be made, Norman Jewison was set to direct, but Spike Lee, a bigots bigot, got the job, as he stated that  a movie about X could only be directed by a black man.
