Seashells and Sea Glass
« on: November 16, 2009, 12:23:01 PM »
I'm planning a trip to Galveston and the Bolivar Peninsula soon. I'm hoping to pick up some pretty shells and sea glass. I haven't tried to do this before just for shell/sea glass hunting. In fact I only found out about sea glass a few days ago but it fascinates me.

Has anyone ever done this before and what tips can you give me to find either type of object?

Also I'm curious how small colored pebbles can be told apart from sea glass.

Sea Glass is pieces of broken bottles that the sand polishes like the ones in the pictures. The beach near my house has a strip of pebbles near the high tide mark that the glass seems to come to rest in. The old style Coke bottles is where most of the heavy green glass chips came from. We would collect it as kids but only a few scattered pieces of the years of collecting has survived. The supply always seemed endless so there was no real need to save it carefully. It seems that the bottles have become thinner and people are returning them for deposit so sea glass is not as good or easy to find as it once was. Go to the beach at low tide and search the part of the beach where the tide comes in. That where you should have your best finds.

Hi Ruby. The sea glass is pretty....Sea Glass would make a nice addition for a stained glass window, or they could be used for decor on a clay pot. One other idea... the sea glass would also look great in a clear bowl filled with water and a Betta.

Here's a picture of a Jellyfish I saw on Surfside Beach:

Some cool sea glass and shells were found too but I'll post more about them later.

Dox I liked your sea glass ideas.
