Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Illinos)On October 13, Congressman Luis Gutierrez (D-Illinois) outlined the "core principles" of an amnesty bill that he planned to introduce in Congress before the end of the year. Now the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) says it has received a press release announcing that Gutierrez is ready to introduce what he is calling the "Comprehensive Immigration Reform for America's Security and Prosperity," which would effectively give amnesty to over 12 million illegal aliens in the United States.
Ira MehlmanFAIR spokesman Ira Mehlman believes this bill would bring anything but security and prosperity.
"There's not going to be much in the way of security. This idea that we're going to do background checks on tens of millions of people is absolutely ridiculous," Mehlman contends. "And in terms of prosperity, I cannot imagine how in a country that has ten-percent unemployment, adding millions of low-wage workers to this job market is going to result in prosperity for American workers."
In light of this, Mehlman expects the bill to meet a measure of opposition from a number of Congress members, including Democrats who face tough re-election campaigns next year.
"We are heading into an election year," he notes. "The mood of the public is not really that good these days, and so there would have to be an awful lot of members of Congress from both parties who are going to be very, very nervous about this because they understand what the reaction of the folks back home is likely to be."
According to Mehlman, FAIR is prepared to fight against the amnesty bill.
