Hard Liquor and Judaism?
« on: February 09, 2010, 06:55:48 PM »
I've been trying to stick to kosher and I am wondering about the kosher status on certain alcohol in specific hard liquor. I know that wine is commonly used in festivals and has a place in Judaism though I am not sure what standards are used to specify if it's kosher or not.

I admit I like to drink time to time especially rum. I was reading an article about kosher status on hard liquor and it appears that some of the materials were questionable with the exception of vodka, can anyone specify hard liquor and kosher status or if there is kosher hard liquor? I would assume artificial sweeteners found in a lot of hard liquor would violate kosher.

I do not know enough about kosher laws and alcoholic beverages to give you solid advice on what the Rabbinical laws are.  However I can recommend a good book which discusses this in detail.

"Is it Kosher?" by Rabbi E. Eidlitz.

He gets ridiculously in depth over a lot of issues.  How much mold is on grapes in the supermarket we cannot see, issues of finding bugs in salads [how many are eaten before kashrut is broken, etc]  I remember him addressing alcohol, and single malt scotch vs. blended whiskey, etc.  He really gets so meticulous in some areas that I lose my appetite!  I borrowed this book from a library in Los Angeles, perhaps there is a copy in your library, or a cheap copy online.

I think the general idea, aside from what is kosher, is to not get into a stupor from alcohol, just drink enough to "gladden the heart" [too much of anything makes an addict].

Noah is credited with inventing wine, and I believe some of the Midrash points to him being castrated [aka: his "nakedness uncovered"] by Ham while Noah was passed out in a stupor [to prevent Noah from having a larger family to spread out his wealth to when he eventually passed away, Ham wanted to limit Noah to 3 sons including himself].
"You must keep the arab under your boot or he will be at your throat" -Unknown

"When we tell the Arab, ‘Come, I want to help you and see to your needs,’ he doesn’t look at us like gentlemen. He sees weakness and then the wolf shows what he can do.” - Maimonides

 “I am all peace, but when I speak, they are for war.” -Psalms 120:7

"The difference between a Jewish liberal and a Jewish conservative is that when a Jewish liberal walks out of the Holocaust Museum, he feels, "This shows why we need to have more tolerance and multiculturalism." The Jewish conservative feels, "We should have killed a lot more Nazis, and sooner."" - Philip Klein

Soju (Korean liquor)

Only recommended when bearing a reliable kosher symbol.
TEQUILLA

Tequila is made from the agave cactus in Mexico. According to Mexican law any tequila may be labeled 100% agave even though it contains no more than 51% actual agave alcohol!
However, based on research, the cRc has identified one type of tequila which is recommended even without a hechsher (Regular-White).
There are three types of tequila on the market:

   1. Regular-White (also known as Silver) tequila is recommended. This clear tequila contains either 100% agave or a mixture of agave and sugar cane.
   2. Gold-Brown tequila is not recommended. This darker tequila is aged for 3 months and may have color and flavoring added.
   3. Reposado (rested ) (also known as Special) tequila is not recommended. It is aged for 6 months and in addition to concerns of color and flavoring, glycerin may be added for density.

Some acceptable Tequila brands:

    * Agave 99 (with OU)
    * Don Bernardo G (with OU)
    * El Diamante Del Cielo (with OU)
    * Herrudura

Mama mia!  That is a load of Kosher booze alright!  Glad to see some Balvenie is kosher.  It's been a long time since I was an "active" drinker, but I do love to partake every once and awhile.  Great list.  Thanks Muman.

Your welcome... I have found a wonderful search engine for Jewish topics. All sites are 100% Kosher and I believe that the sites have been checked by Rabbis to make sure that the Judaism is authentic Orthodox Judaism.

Btw, I would suggest questions in Jewish halachah to be posted in the Judaism section of the forum, so that we avoid certain misunderstandings by people who may misinterpret what is being asked or the perspective from which it is being asked.

I think I got drunk from just reading this list!

Johnny Walker that's expensive scotch! I always thought scotch smelled like morgue at the hospital. Before the hospitals combined my dad was purchasing agent of one.
