The intruder fondled the girl in her bed, but he didn't count on a brave 74-year-old babysitter who bit his arm and fought to get him as far away from the child as possible, said Capt. John Darby, with the Special Victims Unit.
Even after the woman reacted, the man continued to fondle the girl, Darby said.
The assailant wore a sweatshirt with the hood up and was bullied out the front door by the woman, who was able to pull down his hood and see his face, Darby said.
Police are asking for help in finding the deviant who was in the area of Levick Street and Castor Avenue about 2:30 a.m. Sunday.
It is unclear what the relationship is between the girl and the adult.
Another child was in the house at the time but wasn't approached by the assailant. A parent was at work at the time of the attack.
The child's and the adult's names were not released yesterday by police.
"We have a concern because of the aggressiveness of this male. He wouldn't leave this property," Darby said last night.
The girl and her babysitter were sleeping in the same second-floor front bedroom in the house when the pedophile began to fondle her, Darby said.
The girl screamed and woke up the adult, he said.
The babysitter told police that she then rushed to the girl's bed and tried to pull the man off her.
The attacker even pushed the woman as they struggled on the stairs before finally leaving the house.
He was described as a light-complexioned African-American with freckles or spots on his face, in his late teens to early 20s, 6 feet tall, thin build, wearing a gray shirt and blue jeans.
