Congress backs Israel - even if Obama doesn't

The leader of a Messianic Jewish ministry is very encouraged that three-fourths of both the House and Senate have sent a resounding message of pro-Israel support to the Obama administration.

According to the Unity Coalition for Israel, strong letters of support for the Jewish state were sent to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The House letter was signed by 333 members, and 76 lawmakers added a signature to the Senate letter. They stressed the strong and enduring U.S.-Israel relationship and objected to the administration's shift in U.S. policy to Israel.

Jan Markell, founder and director of Olive Tree Ministries, believes these letters show that even some Democrats are unhappy with the way the Obama administration is treating Israel.

Jan Markell"I think that sensible people, even those on the left in Congress, are seeing the abysmal treatment that Israel is getting from the Obama administration," Markell suspects. "There has never been anything like this in the history of U.S.-Israeli relations for 62 years."

She notes that while some lawmakers support Israel because of its biblical significance, others simply understand that it is a vital, strategic ally in a volatile part of the world.

"Even if we set the Bible aside, here we have the most...[militarily] advanced [and] equipped nation of Israel, and I think that those issues are playing into this," Marlell notes.

The ministry founder suspects some of the lawmakers might have signed the letters because of concerns voiced by their constituents back home.

People all over this country have been active in calling their reps in support of Israel... Zoa, Jewish policy center, and CUFI have all sent out emails and names to call in support of Israel, and building settlements...
