The Indian Foreign Office said on Tuesday that Madhuri Gupta, 53, a second secretary at its high commission in Islamabad, had been charged with espionage against her own country. Ms. Gupta is accused of handing secrets to Pakistan’s notorious Inter-Services Intelligence, agency.
ISI that has strong ties to Islamists movement in Pakistan is believed to be masterminding many of the terrorist attacks in India . India blames Lashkar-e-Taiba, a militant group with ties to the ISI, for the 2008 Mumbai attacks in which 166 people were killed. She was indeed entertaining ISI folk in her home.
Gupta, who had worked in the press and information section for three years, was arrested on Friday after being called back to New Delhi on the pretext of discussing a regional summit in Bhutan this week. She was charged in court on Monday.
The Indian counter-intelligence officials first suspected her of being a Pakistani mole four months ago when she showed excessive interest to gain information about military matters that did not relate to her job.
”We have reasons to believe an official in the Indian high commission in Pakistan has been passing information to Pakistani intelligence officials,” said Vishnu Prakash, a spokesman for India’s Ministry of External Affairs. ”The official is co-operating with our investigations and inquiries.”
Upon her arrest, Gupta admitted passing sensitive information to India’s foremost enemy, Pakistan. “She gave her interrogators chapter and verse of all her contacts, what reports she had sent them, and the fact that she was brazen enough to be doing this by email. ” reported The Times of India.
Gupta, who is not married was originally suspected to have fallen in love with a Pakestani. This seemed to be the logical conclusion since her bank accounts did not show any irregular deposit.
“She does not seem to have done this either for money or love,” the sources said. As it was revealed later, Gupta had converted to Islam six years ago and as the result switched her allegiance to the enemy of her own country.
It is believed that her information helped the Taliban in their February 2010 attack on the Indians in Afghanistan that left six people dead and several injured.
Gupta, who said she has deep sympathy for Pakistanis and Pakistan expressed no remorse for her action. When told that her brother, her only relative alive, has said he is ashamed of her betrayal she said that she did not care.
It is not unusual for people who convert to Islam to turn against their own country. In America, the most celebrated convert was Malcolm X way back in the 1950’s. In recent years many Americans who embraced Islam have joined the jihad against their own country.
Adam Gadahan, an American convert captured in March, released a tape calling for American Muslims to follow the example of Major Nidal Malik Hasan and attack American targets.
Islam is not just a religion but also a state. The objective of Islam is to overthrow all non-Islamic governments and establish the rule of Allah on Earth. Since it is not possible to serve two masters, a true Muslim cannot have loyalty to his or her own country if her country is not governed by the Sharia law.
Noted Shia cleric Maulana Kalbe Jawwad objected to reports in Pakistani media that Indian diplomat Madhuri Gupta arrested on spying charges may have embraced Islam and was perhaps a Shia Muslim, saying a traitor has no religion.
“A traitor and spy has no religion or sect. He is neither Shia, Sunni, Hindu nor Muslim. He is the one who changes his garb as per requirement,” Jawwad, who is also a member of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, said today.
Although Jawwad’s statement is true, it does not apply to Muslims who consider Islam as the only rightful government of the world and hence they do not see themselves as traitors when betraying their own country and people.
