The United States apparently supports the idea of placing troops of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization along the border between Israel and the West Bank as part of any new Palestinian state settlement, according to a report from Joseph Farah's G2 Bulletin.

The proposal reportedly was presented to Israeli officials at the request of Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas. It was drafted with the help of U.S. special Middle East envoy George Mitchell.

The effort is designed to get direct talks resumed between the Palestinian Authority and Israel. The NATO deployment is seen as an attempt to overcome Israeli security concerns of a neighboring Palestinian state.

Under the proposal, NATO troops also would be stationed along the West Bank and neighboring Jordan. The proposal envisions the entire West Bank becoming the Palestinian state, with certain land swaps with Israel.

The Jewish state, however, has not responded. The obstacle has been resumption of direct talks between the PA and Israel.
