Taliban suicide bomber kills 5 Afghan children

A Taliban suicide bomber killed five Afghan children on Monday and injured one other in the southern province of Kandahar. The insurgent was apparently targeting Dand district governor Ahmadullah Nazick, however, the explosives detonated prematurely and the children near the site of the blast were killed, according to the Kandahar provincial government.

An AFP reporter said the dead children were immediately taken away in body bags, leaving charred body parts of the suicide attacker and small pools of blood at the scene.

Targeted assassinations have become common recently in the volatile region, considered the birthplace and spiritual cradle of the Taliban movement, and in Dand district alone at least nine members of the council have been killed.

July became the deadliest month for U.S. forces in the nine-year Afghan war when six more deaths were reported on Thursday and Friday. NATO officials reported that five American service members were killed by roadside bombs while the sixth died during an armed attack. All of the deaths occurred in the Taliban stronghold in southern Afghanistan. The July death toll ended at 66 Americans killed, surpassing June by 6. A senior NATO official said that one-third to one-half of the 82 districts around the country crucial to the war is now under Taliban control.

Two British troops were killed in two separate incidents in Helmand province, which is also in southern Afghanistan, on Monday. The Defence ministry announced a soldier from the 1st Battalion Scots Guards was killed in Lashkar Gah District by small arms fire and one from 40 Commando Royal Marines was killed by an explosion in Sangin.

The MoD said neither death was linked to Operation Tor Shezada that is currently underway in Helmand. The latest two casualties take the total number of UK deaths in Afghanistan since 2001 to 327.

Lt Col David Southall, spokesman for Task Force Helmand, paid tribute to the two men:

"It is with great sadness I inform you that a soldier from 1st Battalion Scots Guards was killed in Lashkar Gah District of Helmand province yesterday afternoon. Commanding his men, he was killed in action by small arms fire whilst providing security to the Afghan people. His selfless courage and sacrifice in the course of his duty will not be forgotten.”

"In a separate incident, a Marine from 40 Commando Royal Marines was killed in Sangin, Helmand province, yesterday afternoon. Deployed within a foot patrol providing local security to the people in the District, he died in an explosion. He gave his life whilst seeking to improve the lives of ordinary Afghans. His sacrifice will not be forgotten."
