'Everybody Draw Mohammed' Cartoonist Goes Into HidingMolly Norris, the Seattle cartoonist whose joking suggestion for an "Everybody Draw Mohammed Day" earned her a fatwa from religious extremists, has been forced into hiding, for her own safety.

The Seattle Weekly, which ran Norris' comics, said yesterday that "on the insistence of top security specialists at the FBI, she is, as they put it, "going ghost": moving, changing her name, and essentially wiping away her identity." For the moment, at least, she's no longer publishing cartoons, or doing anything else, except hiding from cowardly fanatics who would kill a human being over a stupid cartoon.

'Everybody Draw Muhammad ' Cartoonist Goes Into Hiding On Advice Of FBI

SEATTLE -- A local cartoonist for the Seattle Weekly is in hiding tonight, fearing for her life and acting on the advice of the FBI.

Molly Norris drew the attention of Islamic fundamentalists after drawing a cartoon depicting ordinary objects as the prophet Muhammad. Many Muslims consider visual representations of the prophet Muhammad offensive. Norris also declared May 20, 2010, "Everybody Draw Muhammad Day.” At the time, she said the day wasn't planned out of disrespect for Islam, but to protect the right of cartoonists to express themselves.

Local Islamic leaders say cases like this emphasize the need for people of all faiths to better understand one another.

"There are things that Muslims don't understand about non-Muslims and other faiths that they don't understand about Muslims,” said Nisreen El-Saadoun of the Muslim Association of the Pacific Northwest. “I think it can go both ways."

In the meantime, Norris has dropped out of sight, saying she's changed her identity and dropped her website.
