A key Democrat in Congress is trying to drum up support for his party by warning voters that if the GOP moves into the majority in November, Republicans will issue subpoenaes over every possible issue they can assemble, including Barack Obama's eligibility for office.
The claim comes from House Majority Whip James Clyburn, D-S.C., who told the Grio website in an interview that there would be gridlock in Congress should Democrats fail to maintain their majority.
"You've got people like [GOP Rep. Darrell] Issa from California who is a ranking member on the government oversight committee," Clyburn said in the interview. "He has already said publicly that if he gets the gavel he will be issuing subpoenas everywhere.
"That will define the next two years of the president's administration," he warned. "The White House will be full-time responding to subpoenas about where the president may or may not have been born, whether his mother and father were ever married, and whether his wife's family is from Georgetown or Sampit."

The issue of Obama's birth certificate, of course, is key to the multitude of questions that have been raised about whether he is eligible to occupy the Oval Office. The nation's founders, in the Constitution, imposed a special requirement for the person who is president, that of being a "natural-born citizen."
WND has reported on dozens of legal and other challenges to Obama's status as a "natural born citizen." The Constitution, Article 2, Section 1, states, "No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President."
Some of the lawsuits over the dispute question whether he was actually born in Hawaii, as he insists. If he was born out of the country, Obama's American mother, the suits contend, was too young at the time of his birth to confer American citizenship to her son under the law at the time.
Other challenges have focused on Obama's citizenship through his father, a Kenyan subject to the jurisdiction of the United Kingdom at the time of his birth, thus making him a dual citizen. The cases contend the framers of the Constitution excluded dual citizens from qualifying as natural born.
A number of key cases remain pending, including the situation of a career medical officer, Lt. Col. Terrence Lakin, who refused to follow deployment orders again because he was unable to confirm Obama is eligible to command the U.S. military forces.
Complicating the situation is Obama's decision to spend sums estimated over $1 million to avoid releasing a state birth certificate that would put to rest the questions.
Besides his original long-form birth certificate, WND has reported that among the other documentation not yet available for Obama includes his kindergarten records, Punahou school records, Occidental College records, Columbia University records, Columbia thesis, Harvard Law School records, Harvard Law Review articles, scholarly articles from the University of Chicago, passport, medical records, files from his years as an Illinois state senator, his Illinois State Bar Association records, any baptism records, and his adoption records.
Clyburn said he knows what causes such "acrimony," too. He said there should be federal rules requiring private broadcast outlets to air endorsements and support of a figure like Barack Obama to match the criticism that is aired.
"Twenty-five or 30 years ago, we had the Fairness Doctrine. We decided there was something wrong with enforcing that, so people now feel free to say anything that they want to say, and they don't have to provide any equal time for the person to respond to it. The media do not have to provide this kind of fairness in their reportage," Clyburn contended.
"Twenty-five years ago, we didn't have Rush Limbaugh spewing hate all day, every day, and others on the radio, and we didn't have a TV station dedicated to misrepresenting the facts and people making $20 million to go out and say what they know not to be true. This has created an atmosphere of toxicity."
The Hill website, noted that Issa has indicated he would investigate issues involving the Obama administration, but a spokesman said he is not interested in the birth certificate issue.
"The Democratic Caucus doesn't take Jim Clyburn seriously – Americans shouldn't take his ridiculous claims seriously either," Issa spokesman Kurt Bardella told The Hill in an e-mail.
However, Issa already has raised questions about the administration's possible manipulation of election results involving political races in Pennsylvania and Colorado.
On The Hill's reader participation page, one writer contended the issue of Obama's natural born citizenship has been resolved. "He gets citizenship through birthright and not naturalization," he wrote.
But another said there remain questions. "Why shouldn't we pursue 'transparency' and the truth? Didn't BHO campaign on this?" And another said. "While you're at it, ask for his baptismal certificate."
Another appeared disgusted with the exchange. "When did the D's campaign message boil down to scare-mongering?"
WND reported just days ago on new questions being raised about why the Democrat Party in Hawaii in 2008 refused to include a certification on its paperwork that Obama was, in fact, a natural born citizen.
