A nonprofit organization has criticized the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for boasting inaccurate illegal immigrant removal statistics.

Responding to DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano's report that the 2010 fiscal year was a record-breaking period for criminal alien removals, Dan Stein, the president of the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), said that the total number of recorded deportations has remained roughly the same, while the deportation of non-criminal aliens has dropped significantly.

FAIR claims that about 56,000 fewer non-criminal illegal immigrants were removed from the United States in fiscal year 2010, compared to 2009. The group said the government has adopted new policies to protect non-criminal aliens from being deported.

Stein also stated that Napolitano's comments were part of a plan to fool the American public before November's midterm elections by trying to convince voters that the immigration crisis is being addressed.

Arizona Republican Jesse Kelly, a candidate for U.S. Congress, recently suggested more border control is needed in his home state. According to The Arizona Republic, Kelly's platform includes the construction of a double-layer border fence, the hiring of more patrol agents and the deployment of 10,000 National Guard troops — eight times more than the number sent to the border by the Obama administration.
