In a sign that doesn't bode well for the Democratic Party heading into today's midterm elections, the approval rating for President Barack Obama has reached its lowest level since he was inaugurated 21 months ago.
The latest Harris Poll reveals that 67 percent of Americans have a negative opinion of the job Obama is doing, while 89 percent of those surveyed do not approve of the performance by the Democratic-led Congress.
Most citizens who gave the President the highest ratings were those with a postsecondary education. Approximately 48 percent of those with a post-graduate education gave Obama a positive review, while 47 percent of those with any college background approved of the commander-in-chief.
Meanwhile, nine in 10 Republicans gave Obama negative ratings, seven in 10 independents and six in 10 moderates agreed with conservatives. The majority of nonpartisan voters who disapprove of the President and Congress strengthens the notion that Republicans will gain control of the House of Representatives in the midterm elections.
Some Democratic candidates for Congress are distancing themselves from the President in an effort to help their cause on Election day. Politico.com reports that West Virginia Senate candidate Joe Manchin said he may not endorse Obama if he runs for reelection in 2012 unless he sees significant strides.
"Things have got to change. People will have time to evaluate and make a decision over the next two years and four years," Manchin told the news provider. "I just think there's a lot of correction, a lot of changes, a lot of things that need to be fixed before I would say anything about anybody running for office."
