Palestinian camps primed to explode

BEIRUT, Lebanon – Concern is mounting here over the prospect that failed Israeli-Palestinian peace talks could lead to a third intafada, or uprising, in occupied Palestinian areas of the West Bank and Gaza Strip and in camps where there are large populations of Palestinian refugees, according to a report from Joseph Farah's G2 Bulletin.

An immediate flashpoint could be looming in East Jerusalem where Israelis recently gunned down a Palestinian man and a 14-month-old baby allegedly was killed by tear gas fired by an Israeli security guard.

But if a general wave of violence erupts, it is feared what would develop in the 12 Palestinian camps with more than 200,000 refugees in Lebanon.

Palestinians became refugees in these camps and camps like them in other Arab countries following the 1948 Arab-Israeli War and the 1967 Six-Day War.

It was during the latter that Israel captured Arab lands such as the West Bank and the Gaza Strip which the Palestinians want back to form a Palestinian state.

However, Israel has undertaken a long-term campaign to build Jewish settlements in these occupied areas, a fact that stands as a major hurdle to peace talks and, in fact, has brought the current negotiations to a halt.

"It is becoming increasingly clear that the direct Israeli-Palestinian negotiations are in serious trouble," said Hussein Ibish, a senior fellow at the American Task Force on Palestine, based in Washington, D.C.
