North Carolina moderate Democrat Heath Shuler, whom Pelosi defeated for the position, believed the new minority leader's ultra left-wing agenda was the reason the party took such a drubbing in the midterm elections earlier this month. So he has mounted a challenge to the outgoing House speaker. But many of Shuler's fellow moderates who might have supported him were defeated by Republicans November 2, leaving many of Pelosi's liberal allies to choose her as the next minority leader.
Gary Bauer 2 (American Values)Pelosi was a lightning rod in the midterm elections for Republicans as they portrayed her as a leftist who is out of touch with mainstream Americans. So Gary Bauer, president of American Values, thinks her continued leadership in the Democratic Party is like a gift that keeps on giving.
"From the standpoint of the Democratic Party, she did a great job of ramming their agenda down the throats of the House of Representatives. But in so doing, she has alienated a good bit of the American people, including those independent voters," Bauer explains. "I thought it was rather humorous that for weeks and weeks, there was a big sign outside the Republican National Committee that said 'Fire Nancy Pelosi' -- followed a day or so after the election with a big sign that said 'Hire Nancy Pelosi.'"
He adds that if the face of the Democratic Party over the next two years continues to be President Barack Obama, Senator Harry Reid (D-Nevada) and Nancy Pelosi (D-California), that is not a formidable public presence to represent the party during the upcoming months.
