House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) has officially been nominated to serve as the next Speaker of the House when Republicans gain majority in January.

On the same day that Boehner turned 61 years old, the veteran of Congress was unanimously voted by his peers from the GOP to take over the post currently held by Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), who was elected by Democrats to become the minority leader in the next congressional session.

Representative Dave Camp (R-Mich.) nominated Boehner, and Representatives Lynn Westmoreland (R-Ga.) and Steve Stivers (R-Ohio) gave speeches to support his appointment.

"Since his first days in Congress, John Boehner has stood up to Washington and stood up for the American people," said Camp, quoted by Politico.com. "As a leader of the reform-minded Gang of Seven that closed the House Bank (in the early 1990s), John refused to accept business as usual."

Camp was referring to the group of freshman Representatives who were elected in 1989, and who later condemned the chamber for allowing its members to overdraw their checking accounts without being penalized.

In other GOP voting on Nov. 17, Eric Cantor (R-Va.) was elected as the majority leader and Tim Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) as the majority whip.

While Republicans scored sweeping victories on Election Day, many voters are not optimistic that a shift in power will result in significant changes in the way Washington works. A Rasmussen Reports national survey that was conducted earlier this month reveals that 59 percent of voters said it is somewhat likely that Americans will be disappointed with Republicans in Congress by 2012.
