The United Nations is set to vote on a measure that would silence any ideas considered to be anti-Islam.

The Defamation of Religions Resolution would criminalize words or actions that are perceived as an attack against a religion. But the pledge, which is backed by a coalition of Muslim countries, is expected to silence Christian and minority religions as Lindsay Vessey of Open Doors USA says an individual can be imprisoned and sentenced without any proof that he or she has committed a crime.

"The intent is really to protect Islam. There [are] numerous references to Islam, and we can also tell that by the countries who are backing the resolution -- it's the Organization of Islamic Conference states," she notes.

Open Doors USAThe Open Doors advocacy director adds that the resolution is problematic because it will consider statements made by Christians or other religions that contradict Islam to be blasphemous.

"It tries to protect an idea or an ideology instead of an individual, so you can see where this becomes really problematic in countries for Christians, for Jews, for other minorities," Vessey explains.

The resolution would strengthen current laws in countries like Pakistan and Saudi Arabia that silence Christianity. Open Doors is urging Christians to log onto FreeToBelieve.info and join others in speaking out against the measure.
