Personal Data-Mining Scam on Facebook: Beware of Fake "Jewish Women" Profiles on Facebook
by Rafael V. Rabinovich

בס"ד

They all have modeled pictures in their profiles, because the author of the scam has taken them off Russian models.  They are European, Russian, Israeli, or American. They are all in their twenties, affluent, liberal, educated, from either a completely secular background or from a religious background but have left religious observance altogether. Perhaps you'll "rescue" them back to Judaism, or perhaps you'll want to become their personal friend. Either case, is a lost cause.  They are NOT REAL!

The author of the scam has repeated this shtik over and over for well over a year.  There are over one hundred fake profiles. Often times their bio repeats: their parents live in Israel. They have "visited Israel" but their album pictures don't ever show them in any recognizable Israeli landmark, or even in a place where the background lets you see anything Israeli-like.  Some have cleverly insterted images of famous places in Israel among their pictures, with the model conspicuosly missing. For girls so much into modelling, isn't it curious why they never ask anyone to hold their camera and take a snapshot of them in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, or any place you'd love to have a record of in your visit?

Some are of Sephardic background, but none of them know the right spelling (they are "Shefardim"). That gives you the first clue the whole scam is the work of a single author with lots of time on his hands.

Is this dangerous?

You bet!

The scammer is data-mining!  By becoming your friend on FB under a false pretense the con-artist is gaining access to the personal information you share with your friends, and is capable of following any activity your report in Facebook. This can be the basis of future scams that may involve misrepresenting you, or perhaps black-mailing you for money. Your identity may be stolen. Or a scam can be played on your friends and family using information you've inknowingly shared with a criminal.

Facebook, for some reason, is not closing those fake profiles. At least not yet.  Help by denouncing them.  Once you become aware of the scam, it results quite simple to spot them.

Here is the original article and the list of all the fake profiles the author was able to identify so-far. If you're suspicious, be careful and analyze well the situation.  Not all pretty-looking young Jewish ladies in New York are fake accounts, but all of the fake profiles exist without one single real-life person ever meeting any of them, despite how outgoing and gregarious they seem to be.

Spiraling,

I had a friend who was completely taken in by a Russian woman this way.  We all knew it was a scam, but being a good guy, he had pretty much fallen in love with her, naive as that was.
