“There wasn’t one single Republican that voted for the DREAM Act, not one,” the first lady said in an interview set to air Sunday on Univision’s “Al Punto” with Jorge Ramos. “So I urge the Latino community, he needs help, he’s got to have Republicans and Democrats in Congress who are going to step up.”
The interview for the Spanish-language show was conducted in English.
Making rare policy remarks on the show, the first lady said that if an immigration bill is on President Barack Obama’s desk “he is going to sign it.”
“But it’s got to get through Congress, he can’t do it alone,” she said.
Obama said her husband has had immigration reform “from the minute he thought about running for this office.”
“He is, he has talked about it at every State of the Union address that he’s given and he pushed hard, I think, as he said, the greatest disappointment in this last legislative year is that the DREAM Act didn’t get passed, that immigration got pushed aside,” she said. “But people have to know that the President can’t pass immigration reform without the support of Congress and we don’t have that.”
