Protest in Pale-Republic of Serpska

The arrest of the Bosnian Serbs’ former military leader Ratko Mladic has sparked protests in Serbia. 35 demonstrators were arrested in Belgrade and at least 20 in Novi Sad during unrest that protests spilt over into.

In Belgrade, the protesters twice tried to gather in the main square, but police checked the attempts.

In Novi Sad, the demonstrators tried to take the RTS government television building and the headquarters of the local branch of the ruling Democratic Party by storm.

Smaller-scale protests took place at Aranjelovzc, Cacaka, Kraljevo and Zrenjanin. Mladic, who’s been in hiding for 15 years, was arrested on Thursday.

The Hague Tribunal is pressing for his extradition on charges of committing war crimes in Bosnia in the middle of 1990s.
