Migrant suspected of molesting teenage girl
Eritrean national arrested for allegedly committing indecent act on 13-year-old girl in south Tel Aviv. Taxi driver who noticed crime alerted police, held suspect down

Police arrested on Saturday an Eritrean migrant suspected of committing an indecent act on a 13-year-old girl. A bystander who saw the act being committed alerted Tel Aviv police officers, who arrived at the scene shortly thereafter and arrested the suspect.
An initial police investigation indicates that the suspect approached the girl, who was walking around one of Tel Aviv's southern neighborhoods on her own, and performed an indecent act on her. A taxi driver who spotted the perpetrator immediately informed the police.

When police forces arrived at the scene, the taxi driver got out of his car and held down the suspect while the police handcuffed him and took him to the police station. Police commended the taxi driver for his alertness. The suspect is set to be remanded at the Tel Aviv Magistrate's Court.
A similar incident occurred last week when police arrested a 30-year-old Eritrean migrant who is suspected of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl in the waters off a Tel Aviv beach. Police said that the suspect swam up to the victim while she was bathing in the water, and performed indecent acts on the girl against her will. When the girl began to scream for help, the suspect then pushed her head under water. Police who arrived at the scene arrested the man.
However, crime rate among foreigners residing in Israel is still significantly lower than that of the rest of the population, data complied by Dr. Gilad Nathan of the Knesset's Research and Information Center shows.
According to Nathan's research, the Tel Aviv district holds the highest number of reported criminal cases opened against foreigners. During the months of January and February 2012, the number of reported crimes committed by illegal residents was 13.5% out of all of the reported crimes committed in the district.

According to the data, the number of foreign residents staying in Israel in the year 2012 is 250,000. Among the foreign residents are refugees and asylum seekers. Israel's foreign population stands at approximately 3% of the population.
