High time JTFers started safeguarding their privacy and anonymity.
You have the right to lock your doors, you have the right to remain silent in police interviews, though G-d forbid anyone should go through that. Extend the same protection to your digital world.

A public key in case you don't know is a system where data is encrypted by what is called a public key but can only be decrypted by a npn-symmetrical corresponding private key. The public key can be made general knowledge - hence the term.
We use public key cryptography quite often without realising it. When you see the little padlock sign on https on sites like ebay, the channel has been secured by that sites public key, thats how they exchange data.
You can extend the benefits to email.
It would mean that once you encrypted data with the recipients public key, then only that recipient will be able to decrypt the data...
ever.
Would save me messing about with PMs and password swapping when I needed to send sensitive data.
Now there are two freeware bits of software that can facilitate this which I have been kind enough to provide links for. BCarchive for data and BCtextencoder.
They're easy to use and the BCtextencoder doesn't even need installing.
I have a public key so I can send messages to myself at the moment, which is useless. I've no one to play with. I need someone to play with. Do not begrudge the couple of minutes it will take to generate your keypair, the payoff will be tremendous.

OK, read the help file, make sure your key is at least 2048 bits, give your private key a strong password, at least twenty characters and put a number or symbol in somewhere where you can remember it.

If you forget the pass or lose the private key, then no one is decrypting data adressed to you...ever.

You can publish and send the public key anywhere you want, tho I recommend limiting distribution, so people know its from you and you do not send the private key (duh)

For home use there is PGP (A commercial product I believe) or the open source version GPG {Gnu Privacy Guard}

Of course the encoder/decoder can be used to encrypt local files also. When dealing with a message from one GPG user to another the public keys are shared, so the message can be encrypted so only the intended recipient can decode it.

I guess BritishSword is talking about alternative software to the PGP/GPG toolchain.

I find the existing tools adequate enough to do all my encryption. GPG is free and there are many tools which work with it.

I personally had to use pgp for a client once for email communication. He was extremely paranoid about corporate espionage, snooping, etc.

The problem is I can't force people to encrypt emails they send me, and I can't expect them to go through the trouble of decrypting the mails I send them. Except for this two little problems which render encrypted communication all but useless, gpg is awesome.

Security quality

To the best of publicly available information, there is no known method which will allow a person or group to break PGP encryption by cryptographic or computational means. For instance, in the original version, the RSA algorithm was used to encrypt session keys; RSA's security depends upon the one-way function nature of mathematical integer factoring.[2] Likewise, the symmetric key algorithm used in PGP version 2 was IDEA, which might, at some future time, be found to have a previously unsuspected cryptanalytic flaw. Specific instances of current PGP, or IDEA, insecurities—if they exist—are not publicly known. As current versions of PGP have added additional encryption algorithms, the degree of their cryptographic vulnerability varies with the algorithm used. In practice, each of the algorithms in current use is not publicly known to have cryptanalytic weaknesses.

New versions of PGP are released periodically and vulnerabilities are fixed by developers as they come to light. Any agency wanting to read PGP messages would probably use easier means than standard cryptanalysis, e.g. rubber-hose cryptanalysis or black-bag cryptanalysis i.e. installing some form of trojan horse or keystroke logging software/hardware on the target computer to capture encrypted keyrings and their passwords. The FBI has already used this attack against PGP[3][4] in its investigations. However, any such vulnerabilities apply not just to PGP, but to all encryption software.

In 2003, an incident involving seized Psion PDAs belonging to members of the Red Brigade indicated that neither the Italian police nor the FBI were able to decrypt PGP-encrypted files stored on them.[5]

A more recent incident in December 2006 (see United States v. Boucher) involving US customs agents and a seized laptop PC which allegedly contained child pornography indicates that US Government agencies find it "nearly impossible" to access PGP-encrypted files. Additionally, a judge ruling on the same case in November 2007 has stated that forcing the suspect to reveal his PGP passphrase would violate his Fifth Amendment rights i.e. a suspect's constitutional right not to incriminate himself.[6][7] The Fifth Amendment issue has been opened again as the case was appealed and the federal judge again ordered the defendant to provide the key.[8]

Evidence suggests that as of 2007, British police investigators are unable to break PGP,[9] so instead have resorted to using RIPA legislation to demand the passwords/keys. I also wasn't talking about just email. If something went wrong with the PM system for some reason we could post messages on the public board and still have them only be read by the intended recipient. How cool is that?

If you use linux you can export the key and save it in a text format. Either using command line or with a gui program like kgpg (KDE) or gnupg (gnome). The keys are by default given name like "my key.asc" but they are actually plain text files. Encrypted files are usually given a name like "name.ext.asc".
