Ezekiel Chapter 38

1 And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying:
2 'Son of man, set thy face toward Gog, of the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him,
ג  וְאָמַרְתָּ, כֹּה אָמַר אֲדֹנָי יְהוִה:  הִנְנִי אֵלֶיךָ, גּוֹג--נְשִׂיא, רֹאשׁ מֶשֶׁךְ וְתֻבָל.   3 and say: Thus saith the Lord GOD: Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, chief prince of Meshech and Tubal;
4 and I will turn thee about, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed most gorgeously, a great company with buckler and shield, all of them handling swords:
ה  פָּרַס כּוּשׁ וּפוּט, אִתָּם; כֻּלָּם, מָגֵן וְכוֹבָע.   5 Persia, Cush, and Put with them, all of them with shield and helmet;
6 Gomer, and all his bands; the house of Togarmah in the uttermost parts of the north, and all his bands; even many peoples with thee.
7 Be thou prepared, and prepare for thyself, thou, and all thy company that are assembled unto thee, and be thou guarded of them.
8 After many days thou shalt be mustered for service, in the latter years thou shalt come against the land that is brought back from the sword, that is gathered out of many peoples, against the mountains of Israel, which have been a continual waste; but it is brought forth out of the peoples, and they dwell safely all of them.
ט  וְעָלִיתָ כַּשֹּׁאָה תָבוֹא, כֶּעָנָן לְכַסּוֹת הָאָרֶץ תִּהְיֶה--אַתָּה, וְכָל-אֲגַפֶּיךָ, וְעַמִּים רַבִּים, אוֹתָךְ.  {ס}   9 And thou shalt ascend, thou shalt come like a storm, thou shalt be like a cloud to cover the land, thou, and all thy bands, and many peoples with thee. {S}
י  כֹּה אָמַר, אֲדֹנָי יְהוִה:  וְהָיָה בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא, יַעֲלוּ דְבָרִים עַל-לְבָבֶךָ, וְחָשַׁבְתָּ, מַחֲשֶׁבֶת רָעָה.   10 Thus saith the Lord GOD: It shall come to pass in that day, that things shall come into thy mind, and thou shalt devise an evil device;
יא  וְאָמַרְתָּ, אֶעֱלֶה עַל-אֶרֶץ פְּרָזוֹת--אָבוֹא הַשֹּׁקְטִים, יֹשְׁבֵי לָבֶטַח; כֻּלָּם, יֹשְׁבִים בְּאֵין חוֹמָה, וּבְרִיחַ וּדְלָתַיִם, אֵין לָהֶם.   11 and thou shalt say: I will go up against the land of unwalled villages; I will come upon them that are at quiet, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates;
12 to take the spoil and to take the prey; to turn thy hand against the waste places that are now inhabited, and against the people that are gathered out of the nations, that have gotten cattle and goods, that dwell in the middle of the earth.
יג  שְׁבָא וּדְדָן וְסֹחֲרֵי תַרְשִׁישׁ וְכָל-כְּפִירֶיהָ, יֹאמְרוּ לְךָ, הֲלִשְׁלֹל שָׁלָל אַתָּה בָא, הֲלָבֹז בַּז הִקְהַלְתָּ קְהָלֶךָ--לָשֵׂאת כֶּסֶף וְזָהָב, לָקַחַת מִקְנֶה וְקִנְיָן, לִשְׁלֹל, שָׁלָל גָּדוֹל.  {ס}   13 Sheba, and Dedan, and the merchants of Tarshish, with all the magnates thereof, shall say unto thee: Comest thou to take the spoil? hast thou assembled thy company to take the prey? to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to take great spoil? {S}
14 Therefore, son of man, prophesy, and say unto Gog: Thus saith the Lord GOD: In that day when My people Israel dwelleth safely, shalt thou not know it?
טו  וּבָאתָ מִמְּקוֹמְךָ, מִיַּרְכְּתֵי צָפוֹן--אַתָּה, וְעַמִּים רַבִּים אִתָּךְ:  רֹכְבֵי סוּסִים כֻּלָּם, קָהָל גָּדוֹל וְחַיִל רָב.   15 And thou shalt come from thy place out of the uttermost parts of the north, thou, and many peoples with thee, all of them riding upon horses, a great company and a mighty army;
טז  וְעָלִיתָ עַל-עַמִּי יִשְׂרָאֵל, כֶּעָנָן לְכַסּוֹת הָאָרֶץ; בְּאַחֲרִית הַיָּמִים תִּהְיֶה, וַהֲבִאוֹתִיךָ עַל-אַרְצִי, לְמַעַן דַּעַת הַגּוֹיִם אֹתִי בְּהִקָּדְשִׁי בְךָ לְעֵינֵיהֶם, גּוֹג.  {ס}   16 and thou shalt come up against My people Israel, as a cloud to cover the land; it shall be in the end of days, and I will bring thee against My land, that the nations may know Me, when I shall be sanctified through thee, O Gog, before their eyes. {S}
יז  כֹּה-אָמַר אֲדֹנָי יְהוִה, הַאַתָּה-הוּא אֲשֶׁר-דִּבַּרְתִּי בְּיָמִים קַדְמוֹנִים בְּיַד עֲבָדַי נְבִיאֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, הַנִּבְּאִים בַּיָּמִים הָהֵם, שָׁנִים--לְהָבִיא אֹתְךָ, עֲלֵיהֶם.  {ס}   17 Thus saith the Lord GOD: Art thou he of whom I spoke in old time by My servants the prophets of Israel, that prophesied in those days for many years, that I would bring thee against them? {S}
18 And it shall come to pass in that day, when Gog shall come against the land of Israel, saith the Lord GOD, that My fury shall arise up in My nostrils.
יט  וּבְקִנְאָתִי בְאֵשׁ-עֶבְרָתִי, דִּבַּרְתִּי:  אִם-לֹא בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא, יִהְיֶה רַעַשׁ גָּדוֹל, עַל, אַדְמַת יִשְׂרָאֵל.   19 For in My jealousy and in the fire of My wrath have I spoken: Surely in that day there shall be a great shaking in the land of Israel;
20 so that the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the field and all creeping things that creep upon the ground, and all the men that are upon the face of the earth, shall shake at My presence, and the mountains shall be thrown down, and the steep places shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground.
21 And I will call for a sword against him throughout all my mountains, saith the Lord GOD; every man's sword shall be against his brother.
22 And I will plead against him with pestilence and with blood; and I will cause to rain upon him, and upon his bands, and upon the many peoples that are with him, an overflowing shower, and great hailstones, fire, and brimstone.
כג  וְהִתְגַּדִּלְתִּי, וְהִתְקַדִּשְׁתִּי, וְנוֹדַעְתִּי, לְעֵינֵי גּוֹיִם רַבִּים; וְיָדְעוּ, כִּי-אֲנִי יְהוָה.  {ס}   23 Thus will I magnify Myself, and sanctify Myself, and I will make Myself known in the eyes of many nations; and they shall know that I am the LORD. {S}

Ezekiel Chapter 39

א  וְאַתָּה בֶן-אָדָם, הִנָּבֵא עַל-גּוֹג, וְאָמַרְתָּ, כֹּה אָמַר אֲדֹנָי יְהוִה:  הִנְנִי אֵלֶיךָ, גּוֹג--נְשִׂיא, רֹאשׁ מֶשֶׁךְ וְתֻבָל.   1 And thou, son of man, prophesy against Gog, and say: Thus saith the Lord G-d: Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, chief prince of Meshech and Tubal;
ב  וְשֹׁבַבְתִּיךָ, וְשִׁשֵּׁאתִיךָ, וְהַעֲלִיתִיךָ, מִיַּרְכְּתֵי צָפוֹן; וַהֲבִאוֹתִךָ, עַל-הָרֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל.   2 and I will turn thee about and lead thee on, and will cause thee to come up from the uttermost parts of the north; and I will bring thee upon the mountains of Israel;
3 and I will smite thy bow out of thy left hand, and will cause thine arrows to fall out of thy right hand.
4 Thou shalt fall upon the mountains of Israel, thou, and all thy bands, and the peoples that are with thee; I will give thee unto the ravenous birds of every sort and to the beasts of the field, to be devoured.
5 Thou shalt fall upon the open field; for I have spoken it, saith the Lord G-d.
6 And I will send a fire on Magog, and on them that dwell safely in the isles; and they shall know that I am the LORD.
7 And My holy name will I make known in the midst of My people Israel; neither will I suffer My holy name to be profaned any more; and the nations shall know that I am the LORD, the Holy One in Israel.
8 Behold, it cometh, and it shall be done, saith the Lord G-d; This is the day whereof I have spoken.
ט  וְיָצְאוּ יֹשְׁבֵי עָרֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, וּבִעֲרוּ וְהִשִּׂיקוּ בְּנֶשֶׁק וּמָגֵן וְצִנָּה בְּקֶשֶׁת וּבְחִצִּים, וּבְמַקֵּל יָד, וּבְרֹמַח; וּבִעֲרוּ בָהֶם אֵשׁ, שֶׁבַע שָׁנִים.   9 And they that dwell in the cities of Israel shall go forth, and shall make fires of the weapons and use them as fuel, both the shields and the bucklers, the bows and the arrows, and the hand-staves, and the spears, and they shall make fires of them seven years;
י  וְלֹא-יִשְׂאוּ עֵצִים מִן-הַשָּׂדֶה, וְלֹא יַחְטְבוּ מִן-הַיְּעָרִים--כִּי בַנֶּשֶׁק, יְבַעֲרוּ-אֵשׁ; וְשָׁלְלוּ אֶת-שֹׁלְלֵיהֶם, וּבָזְזוּ אֶת-בֹּזְזֵיהֶם--נְאֻם, אֲדֹנָי יְהוִה.  {ס}   10 so that they shall take no wood out of the field, neither cut down any out of the forests, for they shall make fires of the weapons; and they shall spoil those that spoiled them, and rob those that robbed them, saith the Lord G-d. {S}
11 And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will give unto Gog a place fit for burial in Israel, the valley of them that pass through on the east of the sea; and it shall stop them that pass through; and there shall they bury Gog and all his multitude; and they shall call it the valley of Hamon-gog.
12 And seven months shall the house of Israel be burying them, that they may cleanse the land.
13 Yea, all the people of the land shall bury them, and it shall be to them a renown; in the day that I shall be glorified, saith the Lord G-d.
14 And they shall set apart men of continual employment, that shall pass through the land to bury with them that pass through those that remain upon the face of the land, to cleanse it; after the end of seven months shall they search.
15 And when they that pass through shall pass through the land, and any seeth a man's bone, then shall he set up a sign by it, till the buriers have buried it in the valley of Hamon-gog.
טז  וְגַם שֶׁם-עִיר הֲמוֹנָה, וְטִהֲרוּ הָאָרֶץ.  {פ}   16 And Hamonah shall also be the name of a city. Thus shall they cleanse the land. {P}
17 And thou, son of man, thus saith the Lord G-d: Speak unto the birds of every sort, and to every beast of the field: Assemble yourselves, and come; gather yourselves on every side to My feast that I do prepare for you, even a great feast, upon the mountains of Israel, that ye may eat flesh and drink blood.
18 The flesh of the mighty shall ye eat, and the blood of the princes of the earth shall ye drink; rams, lambs, and goats, bullocks, fatlings of Bashan are they all of them.
19 And ye shall eat fat till ye be full, and drink blood till ye be drunken, of My feast which I have prepared for you.
20 And ye shall be filled at My table with horses and horsemen, with mighty men, and with all men of war, saith the Lord G-d.
21 And I will set My glory among the nations, and all the nations shall see My judgment that I have executed, and My hand that I have laid upon them.
22 So the house of Israel shall know that I am the LORD their G-d, from that day and forward.
23 And the nations shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity, because they broke faith with Me, and I hid My face from them; so I gave them into the hand of their adversaries, and they fell all of them by the sword.
כד  כְּטֻמְאָתָם וּכְפִשְׁעֵיהֶם, עָשִׂיתִי אֹתָם; וָאַסְתִּר פָּנַי, מֵהֶם.  {ס}   24 According to their uncleanness and according to their transgressions did I unto them; and I hid My face from them. {S}
25 Therefore thus saith the Lord G-d: Now will I bring back the captivity of Jacob, and have compassion upon the whole house of Israel; and I will be jealous for My holy name.
כו  וְנָשׂוּ, אֶת-כְּלִמָּתָם, וְאֶת-כָּל-מַעֲלָם, אֲשֶׁר מָעֲלוּ-בִי--בְּשִׁבְתָּם עַל-אַדְמָתָם לָבֶטַח, וְאֵין מַחֲרִיד.   26 And they shall bear their shame, and all their breach of faith which they have committed against Me, when they shall dwell safely in their land, and none shall make them afraid;
27 when I have brought them back from the peoples, and gathered them out of their enemies' lands, and am sanctified in them in the sight of many nations.
כח  וְיָדְעוּ, כִּי אֲנִי יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיהֶם, בְּהַגְלוֹתִי אֹתָם אֶל-הַגּוֹיִם, וְכִנַּסְתִּים עַל-אַדְמָתָם; וְלֹא-אוֹתִיר עוֹד מֵהֶם, שָׁם.   28 And they shall know that I am the LORD their G-d, in that I caused them to go into captivity among the nations, and have gathered them unto their own land; and I will leave none of them any more there;
כט  וְלֹא-אַסְתִּיר עוֹד פָּנַי, מֵהֶם, אֲשֶׁר שָׁפַכְתִּי אֶת-רוּחִי עַל-בֵּית יִשְׂרָאֵל, נְאֻם אֲדֹנָי יְהוִה.  {פ}   29 neither will I hide My face any more from them; for I have poured out My spirit upon the house of Israel, saith the Lord G-d.' {P}

This is the Prophecy of Gog UMagog. I read it in full (for the first time) and in fact the truth is that it is actually a Kiddush Hash-m and great victory for Am Yisrael and G-D.

This was the Haftorah last Shabbat...

I posted about it then @ http://jtf.org/forum/index.php/topic,64347.0.html
You shall make yourself the Festival of Sukkoth for seven days, when you gather in [the produce] from your threshing floor and your vat.And you shall rejoice in your Festival-you, and your son, and your daughter, and your manservant, and your maidservant, and the Levite, and the stranger, and the orphan, and the widow, who are within your cities

Muman I saw that. And I am watching this video now (something I saw a long time ago).

 Even though I glanced your posts on this (and other posts as well by other posters by making search here). You have non-Kabbalistic sources? For me the simple reading does not suggest that all nations will fight Israel directly. Perhaps it was inspired by foreign (book of Revelations for example) sources. I don't know for sure.

 But this I also found interesting.

I doubt that the book of revelations had any bearing on the sources I brought.

The idea that virtually all nations will wage war against Israel is based on the Gematria of Gog UMag which is 70, which represents the 70 nations.

http://www.torah.org/learning/perceptions/5771/behar.html

It is true that most of this lesson derives from Kabbalah, but there is absolutely no indication this is derived from non-Jewish sources.

PS: That is the same video I posted in that thread...

The concept of the 70 nations is also discussed in this http://www.kby.org/hebrew/torat-yavneh/view.asp?id=3916

Quote
For behold, your foes are in uproar and those who hate You have raised their head. Against your people they plot deviously (sod = 70= Gog U'Magog=70 nations of the world]; they take counsel against those sheltered by You. They said, "Come let us cut them off from nationhood, so Israel's name will not be remembered any longer! For they take counsel together unanimously, they strike a covenant against You." [Malbim: The purpose of their all coming is against you, that they are jealous of your Divinity in the world through Israel, and this is the special purpose of them all.]

Here, as well, comes a detail of the conglomeration of nations comparable to our Haftarah: .

The tents of Edom and Ishmaelites; Moab and the Hagribes; Gebal and Amon, and Amalek: Philistia, with  the inhabitants of Tyre. Even Assyria joined with them, they became the strong arm of Lot's sons, Selah. (7-9)

Nations rose, nationss fell, but anti-Semitism is alive and well, and in each and every generation they stand against us to destroy us. Because what ever is connected to the hatred of the Chosen nation, all the nations are like one nation, and one man with one heart.

Against this unification will come the punishment of division: I will summon the sword against him to all My mountains – the word of the L-rd Hashem / Elokim – each man's sword will be against his brother. (38:21) Exactly like the first union of mankind against Hashem, The whole earth was of one language and of common purpose ... They said to one another ... "Come let us build a city, and a tower with its top in the heavens and let us make a name ... Hashem dispersed them from there over the face oft of the whole earth." (Bereishit 11:1-8) There also Chazal taught: "to one another" a nation to another nation, Egypt to Cush, and Cush to Put, and Put to Canaan," and there, also, there was sort of sword against each other, "This one asked for a brick, and the other would bring cement, and this one stood on him and cracked his head."

  I know, I am watching (well most of time listening) to it now. I don't agree with that statement, it does not appear to be from the texts itself (perhaps their are other texts of the Prophet)
 Also I don't think taking Gematria of GoG=70 automatically means that its 70 nations and all of them together.

 I would like direct sources from Chazal (like Talmudh or other commentary on Ezekiel Chapter 38-39 or similar things addressing this directly.

Dear Rabbi,
I am wondering about Succot. Why is it important? What is the present significance? How does this relate to the mashiach (messiah)?

Dear Carol,

Succot celebrates the super-natural protection we, the Jewish People, enjoyed when G-d took us out of Egypt. In this sense, Succot is like Passover. While Passover celebrates our rescue from the Egyptians, Succot goes a step farther, celebrating our miraculous existence in the desert for forty years after that.

Thus, the major significance of Succot is a message of gratitude. If not for the food, water, and shelter G-d gave us in the desert thousands of years ago, we wouldn't be here today. Our gratitude to G-d never fades, just like you never stop being grateful to your parents for giving birth to you. So, for the seven days of Succot, Jews leave the protection of their roofed homes and live in huts covered only with branches, recalling the fact that it is not our homes, but G-d who protects us.

Regarding the connections between Succot and messianic times: According to the Prophet Zacharia, the nations who survive the final "War of Gog and Magog" will come to Jerusalem every year "to prostrate themselves to the King, Hashem...and to celebrate the Succot festival." (Zecharia 14:16)

The Prophet Ezekiel describes the Jewish People prior to the "War of Gog and Magog" as living in an almost-messianic state, having been recently gathered from amongst the nations and living in prosperity in their own land. Then, the world's nations - led by "Gog" from the land of "Magog" - will attack Israel in an attempt to put a final end to the Jewish People.

Magog is identified by the Talmud as "Gothia," the land of the Goths. The Goths were a Germanic people, in keeping with the midrashic rendering of Magog as "Germamia" or "Germania."

Our miraculous victory against Gog is to occur during the Succot season, and those of our enemies who repent and survive will come to Jerusalem each Succot to celebrate the anniversary of our victory.

Rabbi S.R. Hirsch notes that "Gog" is related to the Hebrew word for roof. A roof, with its ability to shut out the heavenly influences of rain and sun, symbolizes man's imagined independence from G-d. The symbol of the roof stands in diametric opposition to the weak succah-booth. A succah, covered only by some meager branches, symbolizes our dependence on G-d. Thus, Gog's struggle is the battle of the "roof" against the "succah," in which those who believe only in man's ability to manipulate nature try to eradicate the Jews, whose very existence loudly nullifies this world-view.

The universal nature of Succot is also alluded to in the special Succot offerings, which were seventy in number. This corresponds to the number of primary nations of the world; i.e., the seventy nations descended from Noah (see Genesis Chapter 10). Seventy is also the numerical value of the Hebrew phrase "Gog and Magog."

On second thought, I remember Rav Kahane ZTL HYD having a chapter on this topic in his Sefer Hakadosh Or Harayon. Perhaps later I will review this and see his insights and sources etc.

It seems all the nations fighting against Jerusalem comes from
Zechariah Chapter 14

http://www.mechon-mamre.org/p/pt/pt2314.htm (Read the whole and see in context).

 Perhaps these are 2 different time period and different wars?

 Just glanced at the chapter he does bring sources and I just saw something stating "threefold" Nations will seize control of EY 3 times. Soo perhaps these being different wars (what i said, could be true) Or perpahs some of these thing already happened? Will try to further investigation later.

 Check Pirkei DeRabbi Eliezer, 28) Or Harayon English page 986).

An article I quoted mentioned this, but explains that Gog UMagog will come three times against us:

Quote
When the Talmud refers to Sancheriv as Gog and Magog, it means the entire force that he assembled to destroy Jerusalem at that time. Indeed, that seems to be one of the main criterion of the War of Gog and Magog, as the Leshem explains:

After Moshiach comes, a major war will be instigated against Israel, as mentioned in the Holy Zohar (Shemos 7b), and in Parashas Vayaira (119a) and Toldos (139). This is the War of Gog and Magog spoken about in Yechezkel (38, 39), and Zechariah (14), as well as in Midrash Tehillim (Mizmor 118:9). There it says: Three times in the future Gog and Magog will come against Israel and go up against Jerusalem, and assemble and anger the nations with him to go up to Jerusalem … (Sha’arei Leshem, p. 491)

Hence, there are meant to be three separate wars of Gog and Magog, and according to the following, two have already occurred:

“While in London I heard from the holy Rabbi Elchanan Wasserman, quoting the Chofetz Chaim, that Chazal say the War of Gog and Magog will be threefold. After the First World War, the Chofetz Chaim said that it was the first battle of Gog and Magog, and that in about 25 years there would be a second world war, which would make the first one seem insignificant. Then there would be a third battle …” (Leiv Eliyahu, Shemos, p. 172)

Regarding Medrashim speaking of the future

 According to this

  http://www.truekabbalah.org/pages/documents/k00097.htm

-Many medrashim speaking of the future have already occurred.
-CHZAL predicted everything from their time and on.
-Meaning, Napoleon and Alexander the Great were just as important as the Twin Towers, if not more important.
-An example is the medrash of the three wars between Edom and Yishmoel. One on the land, one on the sea and one at the gates of Yerushalaim.
-Every thing in this medrash probably manifested during the Crusades with the Christen Muslim wars.

I have heard this said that these prophecies have already occurred. But I believe that most agree that only two wars have been fought so far, leaving the third and final war to come. Aside from the mention in the quote I posted above I cannot find much other mention of this idea..
