Islamic State kills 150 captured troops in Syria, say activists:
UN says 43 peacekeepers also detained during fighting in the Golan Heights

Islamic State militants killed more than 150 of the troops captured in recent fighting in north-eastern Syria. It is the latest mass killing attributed to the extremists, activists said, with the violence coming during a 24-hour period. The troops were either shot or slashed with knives.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said many of the soldiers killed were rounded up on Wednesday in the arid countryside near the Tabqa airfield, three days after Islamic State fighters seized the base. The government troops were among a large group of soldiers from the base who were stuck behind the front lines after the airfield fell to the jihadi fighters.

The Observatory said around 120 captive government troops from Tabqa were killed near the base. Islamic State fighters killed at least another 40 soldiers, most of whom had been taken prisoner in recent fighting for other bases in the Hamrat region near Raqqa city, the group's stronghold.

A statement posted online and circulated on Twitter by supporters of the Islamic State group claimed the extremists killed "about 200" government prisoners captured near Tabqa. It also showed photographs of those it said were the prisoners: young men stripped down to their underwear marching in the desert. The photos could not immediately be verified.

President Barack Obama seemed to commit the worst of Washington gaffes Thursday when he updated the American people about the ongoing threat from Islamist militants wreaking havoc in Iraq and Syria.

“I don’t want to put the cart before the horse: we don’t have a strategy yet,” Obama said of the effort to combat the militant group Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) in its safe haven in Syria.“ I think what I’ve seen in some of the news reports suggest that folks are getting a little further ahead of what we’re at than what we currently are.”

Obama’s comment that “we don’t have a strategy,” delivered to reporters at the White House before the Labor Day holiday weekend, prompted immediate mockery from Republicans — not to mention quick damage control from the White House.

Republican lawmakers pounced on the statement as an example of Obama’s perceived indecisiveness:

UPDATE: 2:45 p.m. EDT: In Baghdad 37 people were killed when a suicide bomber rammed an explosives-packed Humvee into a construction site used by the army and police, two police officers and a medical official told Reuters. The blast killed 22 security personnel and 15 civilians, the medical and police sources said.

It began before dawn: One thousand troops taking up position.

The goal? Push ISIS fighters back toward Mosul and farther from Irbil, the capital of Iraq's Kurdish region.

ISIS had already destroyed a bridge linking the two cities a month ago, hoping to prevent any opposing force from advancing on Mosul -- the country's second largest city.

Tens of thousands of Syrian Kurds have fled across the border into Turkey in the last 24 hours to escape Islamic State (Isis) fighters, the Turkish government has said.

The country opened eight crossing points along a 20-mile (32km) stretch from Akcakale to Mursitpinar, allowing about 45,000 Kurds to escape from the Islamist extremists, the deputy prime minister, Numan Kurtulmus, said on Saturday.

The exodus began as Isis fighters seized control of 60 Kurdish villages near the border in a two-day campaign as they approach the town of Kobane, also known as Ain al-Arab.

Kobane, in Aleppo province, is Syria's third-largest Kurdish town and would give Isis control of a long stretch of the country's northern border with Turkey, which fears that a further 100,000 Kurds could seek refuge as they flee possible reprisal attacks by the jihadists.

A spokesperson for the People's Protection Units, one of the Kurdish groups battling Isis, said his fighters' weapons were no match for the looted US arms the militants took from fleeing Iraqi soldiers in June.

"Isis has highly advanced and sophisticated American weapons. We need weapons too," said Redur Xelil. "Isis is now aiming to take over Kobane, as they aimed to take over Erbil."

Masoud Barzani, the Iraqi Kurdish leader, has called for international action to protect the Kobane region, saying the insurgents must be "hit and destroyed wherever they are".

The U.S. and a group of five Arab nations began airstrikes against Islamic extremist targets in Syria late Monday, following through on President Barack Obama’s promise to expand the war against the Islamic State group while also targeting a separate insurgent network there believed to be a direct threat to the U.S. homeland.

A mix of American fighters, bombers and drones, along with ships operating in the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf bearing Tomahawk cruise missiles, began targeting key Islamic State group strongholds in Syria, including Raqqa, Dayr az Zawr, al Hasakah and Abu Kamal late Monday. Al Qaeda's affiliate in Syria is facing mounting pressure from its members to form an ultra-alliance with the rival Islamic State to confront a common enemy after U.S.-led air strikes hit both groups this week.

Al Nusra, long one of the most effective forces fighting Syrian President Bashar Al Assad, was weakened this year by battles with Islamic State, an Al Qaeda splinter group that routinely employs ruthless methods such as beheadings and mass executions.

U.S.-led air and missile strikes, which have hit Al Nusra as well as Islamic State bases in Syria, have angered many Al Nusra members who say the West and its allies have joined forces in a 'crusader' campaign against Islam.

The two share the same ideology and rigid Islamic beliefs, but fell out during a power struggle that pitted Islamic State head Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi against Al Qaeda chief Ayman Zawahri and Al Nusra Front leader Abu Mohammad al-Golani.

But merging would require pledging loyalty to Islamic State, which has declared a caliphate in territory it controls in Iraq and Syria, which would effectively put an end to the Al Nusra Front, fighters in the group say.

Biden blames US allies in Middle East for rise of ISIS:

US Vice-President Joe Biden has accused America’s key allies in the Middle East of allowing the rise of the Islamic State (IS), saying they supported extremists with money and weapons in their eagerness to oust the Assad regime in Syria.

America’s “biggest problem” in Syria is its regional allies, Biden told students at the John F. Kennedy Jr. Forum at the Institute of Politics at Harvard University on Thursday.

“Our allies in the region were our largest problem in Syria,” he said, explaining that Turkey, Saudi Arabia and the UAE were “so determined to take down Assad,” that in a sense they started a “proxy Sunni-Shia war” by pouring “hundreds of millions of dollars and tens of thousands of tons of weapons” towards anyone who would fight against Assad.

“And we could not convince our colleagues to stop supplying them,” said Biden, thus disassociating the US from unleashing the civil war in Syria.

“The outcome of such a policy now is more visible,” he said, as it turned out they supplied extremists from Al-Nusra Front and Al-Qaeda.

All of a sudden the regional powers that sponsored anti-Assad rebels awakened to the dawn of a major international security threat in the face of ISIS – now called Islamic State. After being essentially thrown out of Iraq it found open space and territory in eastern Syria and established close ties with the Al-Nusra Front which the US had earlier declared a terrorist group.

Now Washington needs a coalition of Sunni states to fight the Islamic State because “America can’t once again go in to Muslim nation and be the aggressor, it has to be led by Sunnis, to attack a Sunni organization [the IS],” Biden said, acknowledging that it is for the first time that the US uses a geopolitical strategy.

“Even if we wanted it to be, it cannot be our fight alone,” Biden said. “This cannot be turned into a US ground war against another Arab nation in the Middle East.”

Yemen suicide attack kills dozens:

A bomb blast tore through Tahrir Square in central Sana’a on Thursday morning, killing dozens of supporters of the Houthi movement that controls the Yemeni capital and fuelling fears of more violence between the Shia group and radical Sunni Islamists.

The health ministry estimated that the attack left at least 47 people dead and 75 wounded, with the death toll likely to rise because a number of survivors are critically injured.

Government officials and analysts believe the attack was the work of al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), which seized a major military compound in Sana’a in December 2013.

In September AQAP declared war on the Houthis, whose manifesto includes revival of the Zaydi form of Shia Islam almost unique to the north of Yemen. The Houthis have vowed to eradicate their Sunni rivals, but they have blamed Washington for the Tahrir bombing, claiming the attack was part of a campaign of foreign intervention to destabilise in the country.

Turkish F-16 and F-4 warplanes have bombed Kurdish PKK rebel targets near the Iraqi border, as their ceasefire comes under increasing strain. The air strikes on Daglica were in response to PKK shelling of a military outpost, the armed forces said. Both sides have been observing a truce and it is the first major air raid on the PKK since March 2013. Kurds are furious at Turkey's inaction as Islamic State (IS) militants attack the Syrian border town of Kobane. Fighters from the PKK (Kurdistan Workers' Party) have been aiding Kurdish YPG militia in Kobane and Turkey has refused to help supply its long-standing enemy with weapons or allow Kurdish fighters to enter Syria.

30 die in blast near Ansarullah-manned checkpoint in N Yemen:

An explosion near a checkpoint manned by Ansarullah fighters in northern Yemen has claimed the lives of at least 30 people, while injuring others.

The explosion took place in the city of Rada'a in al-Bayda Province when a bomber set off his explosive-laden vehicle near the checkpoint.

The Houthi movement’s Ansarullah fighters have been engaged in clashes with Takfiri militants in the city. Some other parts of the country have witnessed similar clashes in the past days.

The Houthis are trying to drive out the militants to secure various areas of the country. They have been making advances in Yemen's restive south, taking control of the towns of Yarim and Rada’a. Al-Qaeda-linked militants controlled the towns for nearly two years.

The Ansarullah fighters have been sending reinforcements to the south, near the al-Qaeda strongholds, in an attempt to drive the terrorists out of the area.

In September, Ansarullah revolutionary fighters gained control over the capital Sana’a following a four-day battle with army forces loyal to General Ali Mohsen al-Ahmar, the half-brother of former dictator, Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Public executions and mass graves: ISIS targets Sunni tribe in Iraq

The abduction and suspected killings follow reports this week of public executions and the discovery of mass graves containing the bodies of tribesmen killed by ISIS.

The bodies of an estimated 200 members of Albu Nimr were found in a mass grave just outside Hit, a senior Iraqi security official told CNN. The tribesmen were captured by ISIS fighters after it took control of the area, the official said.

Another 48 tribesmen were marched through the streets of Hit before they were publicly executed, the official said.

And a mass grave was found in nearby Ramadi, according to Iraqi media accounts. Video of those executions had been uploaded to the Internet.

"We are deeply concerned by reports of mass executions of Sunni tribesmen in Anbar province by ISIL and strongly condemn the brutal actions that ISIL continues to perpetrate against the Iraqi people," U.S. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said.

Briton Kabir Ahmed 'among Iraq suicide bombing dead':

British man Kabir Ahmed is reported to have died while carrying out a suicide bombing in Iraq.

The Foreign Office has said it was "aware of reports of the death of a British national in Iraq".

There has been no confirmation of the death of Ahmed, also known as Abu Sammyh Al Brittani, who is from Derby.

Islamic State (IS) militants named him as being among the bombers who killed a senior Iraqi police official in Baiji, north of Baghdad.

The attack took place on Friday when a truck packed with explosives was driven into the convoy of Lt Gen Faisal Malik Zamel, who was inspecting forces in the town.

He was killed along with seven other police officers and 15 people who were wounded.

Suicide bomber kills 45 at volleyball match in Afghanistan:

(Reuters) - A suicide bomber detonated his explosive vest in a crowd of spectators at a volleyball match in Afghanistan on Sunday, killing 45 people, a provincial official said, as foreign troops withdraw from the country after more than a decade of fighting.

Mukhles Afghan, spokesman for the governor of Paktika province, said at least 50 more were wounded in the attack in Yahya Khel district, where residents had gathered to watch a tournament final.

He said most of the casualties were civilians.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for Sunday's attack. The spokesman said around 50 more people were wounded.

Casualties were high because the crowd was so dense, since people had come from nearby districts to cheer on their team. No other details were immediately available because of the remoteness of the location.

The Taliban and other jihadist militants have unleashed waves of suicide attacks in Afghanistan this year as foreign forces pull out after 13 years of war.

About 12,000 international troops will remain in Afghanistan next year to train and support Afghanistan's security forces.

Islamabad, Pakistan (CNN) -- The Taliban stormed a military-run school in northwest Pakistan on Tuesday, gunning down at least 126 people -- most of them children -- in one of the volatile Asian nation's deadliest attacks.

Hours after the attack, Pakistani troops were still exchanging gunfire with the militants inside the Army Public School and Degree College in the violence-plagued city of Peshawar, about 120 kilometers (75 miles) from the country's capital, Islamabad.

Two explosions were also heard.

By around 4 p.m. (6 a.m. ET), the Pakistani military had pushed the attackers back to four blocks of the school, military spokesman Gen. Asim BajwaI tweeted. BajwaI over an hour later said that six assailants had been killed.

It was unclear, by then, how many of the hundreds of students at the co-ed school -- which is for children of army personnel and has a capacity of 1,000 -- were still inside, not to mention how many more were dead or alive. More than 100 people were injured, ministers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province said.
