Yemen war: Death toll in attack on military base rises to 111

The death toll from Saturday's missile attack on a military training camp in Yemen has risen to at least 111, the country's government has said.

The missile struck a mosque at the al-Estiqbal camp in Marib where soldiers had gathered for evening prayers.

The government blamed the rebel Houthi movement, but it did not immediately confirm it had launched the missile.

It was one of the bloodiest single attacks since the conflict in Yemen escalated five years ago.

The fighting between the Houthis and forces loyal to the government, which is backed by a Saudi-led coalition, has devastated the country, killed an estimated 100,000 people, and triggered the world's worst humanitarian crisis.

More than 11 million people face a daily struggle to find enough food, and 240,000 people live in famine-like conditions, according to the World Food Programme.

Initial reports about the attack on al-Estiqbal camp, which is 170km (105 miles) east of the rebel-held capital Sanaa, said at least 80 soldiers were killed.

But by Sunday night the death toll had risen to at least 111 due to the "serious and fatal injuries sustained by the soldiers", Health Ministry Undersecretary Abdul Raqeeb al-Haidari told the news website al-Masdar Online.

Military and medical sources told AFP news agency that 116 people had died.

President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi denounced the missile attack as a "cowardly and terrorist" act, which he said confirmed "without doubt that the Houthis have no desire for peace".

The Saudi foreign ministry said the incident "reflects this terrorist militia's disregard for sacred places and... for Yemeni blood".

The United Nations special envoy for Yemen, Martin Griffiths, condemned the recent escalation of hostilities in the country, and said Saturday's attack was "of particular concern".

"I have said before that the hard-earned progress that Yemen has made on de-escalation is very fragile. Such actions can derail this progress," he warned. "I urge all parties to stop the escalation now and to direct their energy away from the military front and into the politics."

Sunni and Shiya are in no mood of mutual compromise. The mutual contradictions between them have grown very sharp, deep and broad.

‘Can Defeat Them In 10-12 Days’: PM Modi Tears Into Pakistan At NCC Rally

Speaking at the Annual Prime Minister's National Cadet Corps (NCC) Rally 2020, Modi said the neighbouring country has lost three wars, but still continues to wage proxy wars against India.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday, tore into Pakistan and said that India will defeat the country in a matter of days. Speaking at the Annual Prime Minister's National Cadet Corps (NCC) Rally 2020, Modi said the neighbouring country has lost three wars, but continues to wage proxy wars against India.

“We know that our neighbouring country has lost three wars against us, our armed forces don't need more than 10-12 days to defeat them. They've been fighting proxy wars against India since decades. It claimed the lives of thousands of civilians, jawans,” said the Prime Minister.

Previous governments, he said, treated the problem as a law and order issue."But even when out armies would ask for action, they would not go ahead," he said, slamming the "inaction" of previous governments at the Centre.

He slammed Pakistan for the persecution of minorities and said: “Those who are fearmongering on CAA refuse to see the persecution of religious minorities in Pakistan. Shouldn't we help the persecuted? Some time back a Pakistan Army advert came out in which it was clearly written that only Non-Muslims apply for sanitation workers post.”

He said the problem in Jammu and Kashmir persisted since Independence and some families and political parties kept issues in the region "alive", as a result of which terrorism thrived there.

He said the present government has been trying to solve decades-old problems plaguing the country.

He also said that currently, not only J-K, but other parts of the country are also peaceful and the government has managed to address the aspirations of the northeast region which were neglected for decades.

He said the government has brought the Citizenship Amendment Act to correct "historical injustice" and to fulfill the BJP's "old promise" to religious minorities living in neighbouring countries.

Listing out the achievements of the government, the PM referred to the Bodo agreement, Triple Talaq, abrogation of Section 370 in Jammu and Kashmir among them.

Dozens killed in attack on political rally in Kabul :

Gunmen opened fire on Friday at a ceremony in Afghanistan’s capital attended by prominent political leaders, killing at least 32 people and wounding dozens more before the two attackers were killed by police, officials said.

The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement on its website.

Militants from Isis have declared war on Afghanistan’s Shias, and many of those at the ceremony were from the minority sect. The ceremony commemorated the 1995 slaying of Abdul Ali Mazari, the leader of Afghanistan’s ethnic Hazaras, who are mostly Shia Muslims.

The Taliban said they were not involved in the attack, which came less than a week after the US and the group signed an ambitious peace deal that lays out a path for the withdrawal of American forces from the country.
