Paratroops Rescue Golden Eagles In Hevron
(IsraelNN.com) Two golden eagles that were being held illegally in a Hevron home were successfully rescued, thanks to a paratroop reserve unit's alertness.
The paratroopers saw the eagles inside an apartment and reported the information to the Nature and Park Authority. The Authority's Inspector in the Judean Desert and Mount Hevron, Avim Atar, then entered the building accompanied by soldiers from the 202nd Paratroopers. A floor to floor search yielded no eagles, but a resident told the soldiers that the eagles had been transferred to the back courtyard of a store in the casbah. Atar and the soldiers proceeded to the casbah and found the rare birds.
The people suspected of stealing the birds were interrogated and released on NIS 1,000 bail. They will be put on trial for possession and trading in protected birds. The birds cannot be released into the wild because they were taken from their nest when they were still chicks and do not recognize themselves as eagles. They were transferred to the Biblical Zoo in Jerusalem.
