Have him write about Dr. Sowell, Colonel West, or Pastor Manning.

Or, if it needs to be a historical figure, go with good old reliable George Washington Carver. You can't go wrong with good'ole GWC. Peanuts, anyone?

Yes, I was thinking about George Washington Carver.... where would we be without his contributions to the field of peanut butter.

Alan Keyes should be right up his alley

I actually started a thread on just this topic because I knew students would have that problem this month. There were some very good suggestions in there along with the usual JTF humor.

Well there could be a twist.  Your son can start out saying that many black eerr I mean African American civil rights activists made great strides in going against the grain of society.  However, there is one African American civil rights activist that goes against the grain of the likes of Malcom X etc etc etc..Alan Keyes...and why is he a courageous African American?  Because he went against the status quo of the majority in the effort to help African Americans integrate in American society.

How do you like my BS?

Write about my hero Cory Booker of Newark, NJ.
He's had many near heroic experiences.
Or how about our great hero in the blackhouse?

Okay, I've got it but realize that this may not go over well with your son's teacher. Have him write about Anthony Johnson, the first colonial slave owner and the man responsible for making permanent slavery lawful.

Not a bad idea... If only his teacher were a bit more moderate... she is an ultra leftist of course.    But certainly Alan Keyes is heroic for going against idiot racists like the 'reverends'

Your son could write about the "alternative" views of an African American to help them out of the mud, "whether you agree with his views or not."

Sometimes you have to give the teachers what they want to hear. You guys could choose somebody that you think the teacher would like and write about them and what they accomplished. You don't have to say that you agree with it or that you think it was wonderful or anything like that. You can say something having to do with "they contributed to the Civil Rights movement in a significant way by doing A, B, and C". You don't have to say whether this is a good or a bad thing, just give facts.

Any decision yet, Briann?  I mean a good way to start the report could be, "I had trouble thinking of the perfect individual to discuss on Black History month and sets a good example.  After much thought, I went with Alan Keyes."

I don't know how a school could punish a student for doing a legitimate report on Alan Keyes, Clarence Thomas, Dr. Sowell, etc. If they did it would leave them wide open to claims of political bias and discrimination and I think they know that.

A report mocking Martin Lucifer King, while certainly laudable, is something else.
