WESTPORT, Conn. – The Conservative Synagogue of Westport, Weston and Wilton will take King David to court this Sunday during "The Trial of King David,” an enactment of the Biblical story surrounding King David and Bathsheba.
"The Trial of David” will be staged in the synagogue’s sanctuary, which will be transformed into a courtroom. The trial will focus on David’s controversial relationship Bathsheba, as described in the second Book of Samuel.
As the story goes, King David becomes enraptured with Bathsheba after watching her bathe. They enter into a relationship, she becomes pregnant and David subsequently arranges for Bathsheba’s husband, Uriah, to be placed on the front lines in battle so that Uriah will be killed.
The central question of the trial will be whether David is worthy to remain King of Israel, in light of what he has done.
Real-life attorneys will star in the program. Presiding as the trial judge will be Westport resident Stephen Krawitz. Weston resident Bruce Koffsky and Westport resident Traci Saxon will serve as the defense team, and Westport residents Josh Leitner and Jo Levinson will be the prosecutors. Members of the community in attendance will make up the jury.
The witnesses called to the stand during the proceedings will include Weston High School actors Ross Cohen and Bobby Eddy portraying David and his general Joab, and Westport resident Eva Rawiszer as Bathsheba.
