OUR chilling picture shows the uncle of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un being dragged into court before he was executed.
Denounced as being “worse than a dog” and “despicable human scum” after a sham military trial, Jang Song-thaek was killed soon after this shot was taken.
The politician, who had been one of North Korea’s most senior figures, was placed in front of a firing squad with machine guns.
Even by Kim’s standards since inheriting the leadership from his father, it was an unparalleled act of brutality.
His message was blunt: challenge my authority and you will be purged.
The execution came days after Jang was dragged out of a packed party session by uniformed guards in a staged act of humiliation.
Jang – married to former ruler Kim Jong-il’s sister – had held top posts in the ruling party and was vice-chairman of the National Defence Commission.
He was frequently pictured with his nephew and seen by some as the power behind the throne.
But in early December, it emerged Jang had been removed from his position and that two of his aides had been executed.
He was suspected of plotting to overthrow the state, despite his family connections to the ruler.
Yesterday, North Korean state media announced in a tirade of insults he had been found guilty of being a “traitor of all ages” after confessing to planning a coup.
