I heard somewhere that Foley was basically a propagandist for the Jihadi side to begin with, a typical left-liberal loon who praised the Moslems until almost the very end.

1) He didn't go out as a man, decrying the USA, his citizenship, US military, elating his murders - the Jihadists. There was no evidence of fight in this man, he went as a sheep.
