The opening of ASKJTF this week takes a non-literal allegorical approach to the first few chapters of Breishit/Genesis.

One of the main forces behind the non-literal approach is based on questions raised by science.
The following are links to 2 articles that tries to be science friendly while retaining the literal approach to the first few chapters of Breishit/Genesis

Yes, there were people before Adam. They were Halachically like apes. But Adam was a real person. He was the first person with a soul. Regardless of how he was conceived, don't you agree he was a real person? Noah was also a real person regardless of whether you believe the Flood literally destroyed the whole World. All the names listed in the line from Adam to Abraham were also real people.
