Thankfully it is "elective" meaning that the student choses if to learn it or not.
Back in the early 90's my Israeli leftist cousin got a penfriend to learn English at school. Where did she get this penfriend from?
English speaking Jews in England or America?
Nein.
It was a non Jewish German girl who travelled to Tel Aviv and stayed with my cousin for 2 weeks while they talked in English. This was enabled by her Tel Aviv school on a large scale.
Even then I remembered seeing more German products in the Israeli shops than in Britain.
To be fair Germany does give compensation money to Israeli Holocaust survivors and some of the younger generation do feel bad about what their country did. Therefore I do not mind some of their products in the shops or mutally beneficial economic trade with them... but my cousin's German penfriend thing really ranckled me.... never mind the Israelis in Berlin currently.
