The vast majority of the ethnic Cossacks fought against the Nazis in the ranks of the Red Army and of the Red Navy on all war theatres.[citation needed] Their service was crucial on the Southern theatre of the Eastern Front. They were used for frontal patrols and logistics on the open prairies (steppes), which they knew well. The Hebrew article about Lev Dovator is more extensive. He was NOT a cossack. The soviets put him in command of a cavalry division, probably most of the regulars were cossacks. He probably was born to to a family of cantonists (Jews which were forced to serve in the Czar's army for decades). He was fully assimilated and a committed communist who serves as a poliotruk in the red army before the war and also fought for the communists in the Spanish civil war.
